I have been contemplating for some time the need to coordinate the cable used in my system. It consists of a variety of types & brands that have been collected over the years. This includes Analysis Plus Big Silver Oval speaker cables & Audio Metallurgy Gold Alloy interconnects to name a couple. It always seemed a step too far to find wires for all parts of my system without breaking the bank.
The arrival of the new TAD speakers with the Werner Jagusch crossovers custom built meant that fitting my usual cables to the crossover connections though possible was not ideal. I began the lookout for cable to use specifically between the crossovers & compression driver mids & ribbon tweeters. The speakers were delivered with standard Jaycar cable which is thick and difficult to maintain a secure connection in the small crossover jacks. I immediately cut up a pair of Audioquest silver speaker cables & replaced the Jaycars. The improvement was significant with clearer more precise imaging and generally better dynamics. The Audioquest cable though sounding pretty good had the same connection issues due to its thickness.
In the nick of time Gryffles offered exactly the right amount of Duelund Coherent Audio DCA16GA to hook up the crossovers. The Dueland cable is multi-strand tinned copper. Modeled on the now extinct Western Electric WE16GA. In Jeff Days excellent review he suggests at least 100 hours of breakin. Straight off the role it was clear this is special wire. I left the system running a few days before a proper listen. The results are astonishing. The silver Audioquest cable it replaced was good quality & much more expensive. I had a small amount of wire left over, not enough to hook up the bass drivers so I made some interconnects and boom straight away they replaced cable worth much more. I then ordered enough wire for a full loom.I have since made speaker cables (the Analysis Plus had a RRP of 2.5K) hooked up the bass drivers & interconnects. The only place it has not worked is between my Cinemag SUT & valve phono preamp do to the lack of shielding & noise. Jeff makes suggestions for solving this with some tinned shielding which I will try.
Jeff makes much of the Duelands "vintage tone" & I totally agree. The clarity & definition is just astounding. This is all delivered with rich natural mids & solid fast bass. In a word exactly what I have been looking for in cables for years ;-)
A friend building similar speakers to mine has ordered his own cable & I unreservedly recommend it.
For everything you could ever want to know about Duelund Coherent Audio DCA16GA read Jeff Days comprehensive review.
