Hi again. Seems I’m back on the geek forum for now... so the price of vinyl only ever goes one way and my appetite for new music is voracious - which has led me down that dark and ugly path we collectively call ‘streaming’. Hmpf. Got myself a Topping D50 to try make this a slightly more ‘hi-fi’ experience and have no real desire to go down the rabbit hole here. Using an HP Pavillon which has an optical audio out so thought I’d try it but I’ll be damned if I can get windows 10 to output through it. USB is plug n play so maybe there’s no real need or benefit - but can anybody point me in the right direction here? The how or why or why not of optical out? Is it me? Is it the pc? The dac or windows? My thanks in advance for any completely non-complicated, totally geek-speak-free thoughts...

Not sure if this helps, I haven't watched all of it.

Or this? support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00501081Maybe just a question of finding where to set the setting of audio out, etc.
(Actually I found that among other answers merely starting with a search on your own phrase, HP Pavillon which has an optical audio out)

USB is probably a better option anyway. Anything you can do to keep windows away from processing sound the better. Optical will still need to go through windows. Your dac should take the usb feed directly bypassing windows shit audio processing

When the DAC is connected by USB to the pc make sure that the sound source uses exclusive mode output to the DAC. That way windows stays out of the way.

Exclusive more output... right. I’ll see if I can figure out what that is and go from there. What I can say this far with certainty is that digital just can’t seem to warm my cockles the way a good old fashioned wreckid can... whatever. Onward.

Did you get optical out going on Windows 10? If not, try this. www.maketecheasier.com/use-the-optical-s-pdif-port-windows10/To see if the Topping dac works on optical you could try it with a CD player optical output, or even a TV, with the same optical cable. Optical is ok for just getting sound but USB is capable of far lower digital noise (jitter). So if the Topping has a USB input use that in preference.
