I agree that hard wiring does sound better but I’d argue not entirely for the reasons Roger discusses above. You can vary the width of a pcb track, and have components’ connections very close to each other so that there isn’t a pcb track involved. Low current traces aren’t a worry. But I think the real reason is the elimination of stray capacitance of the FR4 fibreglass circuit board. Audio Research switched to teflon circuit boards for their high end equipment. Some circuits use surface mount components which are impossible to wire without a pcb.

Interesting! Somehow if I'm spending a lot for an audio component seeing a circuit board somehow feels a bit like a cheat (I know it shouldn't be that way but feels really automated and can't easily justify the price).
