I don't think that things are much different than those earlier days. It's just that people now read/search the internet, rather than Hi-Fi print magazines. Further, they buy directly a lot more online.

Neil - would you say your biggest competitor is other luxury goods and services? New cars, artwork, high end call girls?
Good question... a lot of our clients like cars, wine, travel... could be anything. There are a few into high end watches, and yes we had one who was into high end call girls actually!

Well travel is off the list for a while... so you could see an upswing in spending on audio systems!
...and ladies.

I am happy to answer questions from a retailers point of view, but won't tolerate retailer bashing, we are just trying to make a living, not rip people off. Not sure of anyone here retailer bashing...As I heard Rod Drury from Briscoes/Rebel Sport saying months ago ALL businesses have to adapt to the new new enviroment with all operational choices. Bricks and mortar and online. Profit isnt a dirty word. Not withstanding warranty and after sales service that comes with face to face dealings that a shop provide.

Which reminds me, the “REAL” Hifi stores back in the day were rather snobby and not that welcoming to the average punter. As I recounted above, I had great experience with two non specialist stores, but there was also a specialist store in town who were not so welcoming. They stocked the early Musical Fidelity class A amps and a small range of meridian. Plucked up the courage and went in on-ramp day to enquire about one of the MF amps that had been getting rave reviews. “Oh no, sir, that is only for special customers”. Never went back. They closed not long after that. Totally different experience at dealers in Auckland. The then Linn dealer in Parnell, happy to chat and demo some systems.
