With COVID-19 restrictions in place, today the NZIFF announced plans to present our programme in an online format for the very first time - says new NZIFF Director Marten Rabarts. The New Zealand International Film Festival At Home — Online will take place from 24 July to 2 August - for audiences to screen at home. " We are working with our On Demand provider Shift72 on the technology to deliver a ‘bells and whistles’ digital screening room, coupled with live streaming events possibilities on our own website. "" We are fully committed to a return to cinemas in 2021 and we understand our audiences cherish the experience of sharing the festival films with others as much as we do, but until that’s possible you’ll find us no further away than the NZIFF website or app when we launch our At Home — Online programme in June. "Full information on the programme and details on viewing films via the online platform will be announced on Monday 22 June. I'm kind of looking forward to that - viewing at home. I wonder how the pricing will look, how/if they account for a number of viewers in one household. Probably not. OTOH, there will there be 'Code A' or Code B', etc session times? With home viewing, will you be able to watch at their own convenience, ie 'on demand'.. Depending on pricing, I can see myself watching more than my usual handful of films, if you can choose your own viewing times - unless NZIFF stick to a usual prescribed programme of showing day/times programme for each film. We'll wait and see....

Latest NZIFF 2020 news (snipped): New Zealand International Film Festival will make history by being the first hybrid film festival in the world presenting its programme of films both online and in cinemas.
New Zealand leads upcoming hybrid editions of Venice, TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival ) and Locarno film festivals confirmed for August and September 2020.
...all 79 feature films and seven short film collections will be available online. Of those, 26 films will also be screened in cinemas, usually in advance of later online premieres which will then include live virtual discussions with the filmmakers from around the world.
Participating cinemas in the ‘Your Festival – Your Cinema’ programme are: in Auckland, ASB Waterfront Theatre, Hollywood Avondale, Bridgeway Cinemas, Monterey Cinemas in Takapuna and Howick, and The Capitol Cinema; in Wellington, The Roxy Cinema and City Gallery; in Christchurch, Isaac Theatre Royal and Lumière Cinemas, as well at Rialto Tauranga, MTG Century Theatre in Napier, Len Lye Cinema in New Plymouth, Regent Dunedin and SBS St James Theatre in Gore.
Festival Director Marten Rabarts said these cinemas and venues have shown "their understanding of the extraordinary times we’re navigating by accepting our invitation to be part of a hybrid festival and we see this return to cinemas also as a confirmation of our absolute determination to get the whole festival back into movie theatres where it belongs in 2021 and beyond.”

Is it worth the extra cost of the ticket, the parking cost (exhorbitant in Ak), having to get out of the house etc all for a shared experience?
I'm hosting a home screening.

Night-time parking is free. Except CBD - but if you have an EV, you can sometimes get your parking fee back with a free EV charge

No problem, same bus stop, use your AT transport card. Or use the AT card to street park in Wynyard Quarter ($1.50-3.50 daytime) - if you must drive. Or for free after 6pm.
