I love my Plinius 8150, probably only bettered by a Plinius SA100 partnered with Sonic Frontiers SL1 preamp i owned back in the 90s early 00s.
However, it does not have enough inputs, it only has two line and two tape loops, to meet my needs. I have CD and phono pre into the two line inputs, and use the two tape in inputs for TV and Bluray player. I have a cassette deck I would like to hook up, thus at least 5 inputs required.
But, what second hand amp, in my price range up to 1500 or so, would match the sound qualities of the 8150?
i have been scouring TM and the specials and trade in listings of many dealers, but have only come up with two contenders to date.
1. NAD Silverline S300, has six Line inputs, probably close to 18 years old, asking $1475.
2. Perreaux R200i, 4 unbalanced and 1 balanced line inputs, listed with a start bid of $1650. My CD player has a balanced output so would suit. Dates from about 2003.
I googled looking for information, found very little about the S300, but comparing the 200i to 8150 and later iterations of the same amp, 9100 and 9200, found a long discussion on the old Audioenz forum. Where opinion was evenly split between both. It was generally conceded that the 200i surpassed in bass and treble, but the Plinius won out in the midrange. Our MichaelW contributed to the discussion, along with several familiar names who have not migrated to DL.That viewpoint confirmed in reviews on line.
My loudspeakers are refurbished KEF 104/2s, that major in giving a warm presentation. Would that make up for the 200is deficit in that regard?
Unless someone can advise me otherwise, I am not now seriously considering the S300. Anyone here used the R200i?
Another option. Would using a quality 2nd hand preamp work? Could you connect a preamp to the processor loop on the 8150 thus using the volume control on the Pre to control the power amp section of the Plinius?
