Hi, I’m back in NZ for a few months, normally based in Hong Kong...where nothing has been very normal lately.
One good thing is that music/Hifi is a significant part of life, so I’ve been stretching my hobbie and getting involved in a number of ways. There’s a growing Vinyl scene with markets and shops popping up all over the place, and a good crowd who get together and listen to music.
My hifi journey was rekindled when buying my first house (12 years ago). Crimson Amplification, Linn Axis, Spendor speakers and a Sonos for digital.
Sticking mostly with European gear, I’ve experimented with Full range speakers and now settled on some Altec nineteens...an irrational choice in some ways, but there was an instant attraction, including the bass drive that I was missing for rock music.
After the Linn...I bought a Reson Rota Turntable...which is superb.
On the Digital side I still have the Sonos, which has kept up somewhat with front end requirements (though soon to be replaced by a Mac Mini). Output is through a diy DAC based on the Soekris ladder board and a Lampizator buffer stage.
I enjoy this as much as the Vinyl, but in a different way. I still love getting my hands dirty digging for records. I’m also keen to try a valve set-up.
I really enjoyed my formative hifi years in NZ with the pinnacle being early Plinius electronics and Lambert audio speakers. Great to find this forum and I’m looking forward to participating in the community!
