HI
I'm off to WOMAD soon! In the planning stage (all that camping gear)... plus Bands
Soooo... on the bands front, things I'm interested in and I am selecting only 1 show per day (I know I will see more):
Friday
Bowl Stage: Ziggy Marley (only show he does)
Saturday
Brooklands Stage: Laura Marling (only show she does)
Sunday
Gables Stage: Kim So Ra
Of course, I know you will suggest other bands to see, won't you?

$300 for 3 days. 40+ acts. Cheap I'd say - Elton John would have cost you that

I may have to hit up some old pals in N Plymouth. It's been maybe 15 years since I attended WOMAD.

Saw them some time ago, at Womad. They were really good.
They are on Spotify.

She Who Must be Obeyed is taking her cello with her... which presents an interesting packing challenge as it includes Music stand and Chair.

Not the most portable of instruments, I complain about taking a guitar to band practice ! Maybe buy her a ukelele ?

I gave up the cello after about 6 months because it was a pain to lug around on my bicycle (and I was no good at it!).
Will make every possible effort to go to the next Womad.

Bands listened to on Friday
Kermesz a L'est from the Balkans, good opener and a lot of fun Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, welsh great harp and african kora (harp). Marred by poor sound balance for the first third - too much harp. Once the balance was right, totally brilliant. Hiatus Kaiyote, from Oz, most sampled band in the world. Following in the footsteps of Yo La Tengo, brilliant and complex. Albi and the wolves. 3 piece guitar, string bass and violin. Very very good.

I met my N Plymouth pals up North at Bland Bay this past week - chatted WOMAD a bit. She volunteered there one year.

Bands listened to yesterday
Rura, works on the philosophy of... you paid money to see us we are going to give you lots of notes back. Reb Fountain, never heard of her, has a vinyl album called Little Arrows. I will buy, 'nuff said Hot Potato Band, big brass band, fun but samey. Trio da Kali, great band L.A.B awesome. No, seriously... Laura Marling, solo. I'm a fan, have been for some time. Big sound, great voice. Blind Boys of Alabama, all are visually impaired. Does not stop them rocking the house down.

Sunday Listening
Minyo Crusaders - Japanese TRaditional folk, funked up with Reggae and other driving beats... Tuuletar - a capella group from Finland, recently on RNZ Concert. Brilliant Odette - Still working on her, I'm not sure... Spotify, ho Hot Potato Band - Take 2, and on the Bowl Stage they were very good. See below for my note Marina Satti & Fones, Greek and real fun. Destyn Maloya, another I am not sure about... Liniker e os Caramelows - the notes bigged up that she is transgender, not a good start and so it proved. Salef Keita - From Mali. Following on the well trodden road of West African Music. This was his retirement concert and was wonderful.
SO that was a lot of bands listened to...

My daughter summed it up...
I love coming here and listening to these people, even though there music may not make it into my favourites.
I'll add that I am a creature of ambience and show... Hot Potato Band at the Brookland stage were poor. The Bowl stage transformed them into something that was really fun and good..
