Academy / Oscar recognition should be a shot in the arm for the long-standing Korean film industry. Some of the more memorable films I've watched, have been Korean.

OK, who spotted the hi-fi in Parasite? The horn speakers in the Park family's huge living room in their ultra-modernist house? I think I spotted also a turntable. And a tube amp. And the music - Handel? Or bespoke soundtrack?

After some detective work.... The hi-fi system in the film appears to have been supplied by SBI Audio in Korea, their webpage says equipment is all 'handcrafted by Seo Byong Ik'. The turntable however is still a mystery to me, although it looks familiar. SBI 300B-XLS Tonita amp SBI Sonare Plus phono preamp SBI SP-03 Mk 2 loudspeakers - with front-horn loaded Lowther midrange, dome tweeter & 15" bass driver in what looks like an 'Onken' style reflex cabinet.

IMHO Parasite is an excellent film. However, it probably tends to be a bit of a 'film-maker's film' - Rotten Tomatoes critics aggregate rating of 99% - about as high as it gets. The themes (rich & poor), sub-themes (poor people fighting amongst themselves ), the sets (the house was actually a constructed set, the numerous staircases, the semi-basement abode of the Kim's), the use of music (Baroque music sharpening tension at key moments), the visuals of every scene (the lighting in various parts of the house, the street corner cafe, the flooding scenes), the 'circular' plot (no spoilers ), the casting (Mr Kim, the Kim daughter, Mr & Mrs Park), the references to American culture, the Tarantino-like black comedy, the finale scenes, the ending....

I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was particularly amused by the parental warnings beforehand re sex violence and nakedness. Was the version shown a sanitised version or does Korean cinema have 19th century puritanical standards that apply ?

Censor's warnings would have been local, probably?

I particularly liked the sets - the house of course, the staircase, the basement, the Kim family basement apartment, the flooding scene, the corner cafe.... Did anyone mention the baroque music soundtrack?

Mono through the TV set at our place.

I too watched it, sound redirected from TV optical out to a ProLogic amp (no 5.1 here!) which is normally on Source Direct but for TV films I sometimes use Dolby ProLogic, a bit of rear ambience, at present with mains a small pair of satellites and a sub, while the Sony G333ES mains await repair... But unfortunately distracted by a ph call I came in late, maybe 15 mins late, and perhaps there I missed seeing the hi fi system in the film. Nice soundtrack, far better through the hifi system than the TV, but I'll have to watch it again to catch the start. Maybe on demand. Yes! www.maoritelevision.com/shows/sunday-cinema/S01E001/parasite

Had a closer look...
Moari TV is 1080i HD with two-channel HE-AAC sound.

Had a closer look... Moari TV is 1080i HD with two-channel HE-AAC sound. Ah, the TV is full HD 1920 x 1080, I use an optical to stereo RCA 5V or USB powered DAC box to take analogue to the amp. That explains why I didn't get much surround action. I have the amp set to phantom center. Cheap rear surrounds rarely used.
It's a temporary sit in replacement for an old 125W Denon, a Sony TA-AV670 I bought new back in the day, early '90s. The latter shows some internal pics. Nice toroidal transformer, audio quality filter caps. An amp, not a receiver. Such is humble hifi chez RdM at the moment.

Nice solid vintage amp Depending on content, one of the Dolby or post-surround modes can create some decent surround effects.
