There's always trepidation when 'maturing' artists, especially rock artists, decide that it's time to take on the 'torch song repertoire' or the 'classic American songbook' - eg. Dylan, Costello, McCartney, Rod Stewart... But I'm still a sucker for anything Chrissie Hynde & this, her 2nd solo album - is GOOD. This is ostensibly a Jazz album & she does it surprisingly, distinctively, soulfully, effortlessly well. But what's really good about the album (from what I've heard so far) is the production - not just the usual jazz orchestra with strings, but the backing is 'seasoned' here & there with ear-catching little 'dub' rhythm & electronica touches. I don't think I can hold out until Fremer's write-up, I'll be heading for WowHD or JBHiFi soon Check out this cover version of (the Beach Boys') 'Caroline No'...

BTW, that's Chrissie's cover artwork, including 7 additional individual cover paintings for the 7" Singles Vinyl Box Set, a separate release. And nice Dave Brubeck cover art reference ((Dble LP cover) (7" Singles vinyl box set)

Here's the first play, side 1. SQ seems excellent, surfaces pretty good so far. It may be my system, but I usually/often feel that EU-pressed LPs sound a bit (too) warm, bass-weighty, HFs slightly dulled in balance, overall not as 'fresh', open, dynamically 'alive' as US manuf vinyl. It may be a particular EU plant. I've only once directly compared EU & US pressings of the same record (Rosanne Cash 'The River & the Thread'). Sadly, disc 1 is slightly dished. (Disc 2 is still under glass, will play it soon)

dishing in varying degrees is the norm now i concur re- eu pressings, in my experience most noticeable with female vocals - rosanne cash, suzanne vega, lana del rey, fleetwood mac

The more I work my way into this album, the more I am impressed - sonically & artistically. The sound is big & intimate, bass deep & weighty. The arrangements of these well-covered tunes, have plenty of unexpected dub & electronic infusions in a spacoius aural mix.. Chrissie's delivery has consummate ease. She's not Nancy Wilson, but her phrasings, timing, are natural, unforced, earthy, with surprising range & maybe a bit edgy.

Having listened through both discs, if I have one criticism, it's that everything seems to be mixed & mastered a bit 'loud' - ie. dynamic range is reduced at the low/ppp end. The 'blackness', silence & nuance, end of things, is a touch compressed. This tends to be a modern trend, but a little disappointed to encounter it on this type of release. To be confirmed, stay posted.
