This may not be the ideal subject to ask on a 'Hi Fi ' forum, but we are looking at alternatives to being robbed by Sky for our TV viewing and the occasional movie. So, I am after recommendations for an Android TV Box to suit our simple requirements. Do I need to purchase an expensive box such as Vodafone or Apple, or will a cheap Chinese job ( about $35 - 50 ) provide all the features and performance we need ?? Any first hand experience.?

This is an audio/hi-fi/music/film forum & more. We use an Apple TV. Our daughter has a Chromecast at her flat. A bit more info: Are you watching NZ broadcast TV, internet movies, internet sport, internet podcasts, Netflix, Spark Sport,...?

Probably just NZ TV, Netfix, docos and kids programs for grandchildren. Not really interested in watching sport. What has kept me continuing with Sky is access to Discovery and History type programs.

Interested in options too.
I like the ease of recording programs with Sky, and the Discovery, Choice channels. Not interested in Sports.
So what gets you all the standard freeview channels, at high quality picture quality, with ease of use, low start up cost?
VODAFONE TV?

Gary Steel, the Witchdoctor man, recently reviewed an Android box, a new model, from DishTV. He gave it a very big thumbs up. I tried all of the streaming options apart from the Nvidia Shield. Bought an Amazon Firestick, Roku 4k stick, and AppleTV 4k. Kept the Apple, sold the rest. Fantastic interface, easy for the family to use. I run it via a receiver into a JVC projector. The picture we get is superb. With Netflix and Amazon Prime we have more stuff than we can consume. And of course it has apps for TVNZ and 3Now. No need to record, it's all there on demand. There are apps for plenty of other services. The place for real info is Geekzone.

Just an update for those that are interested. We ended up buying a Vodafone TV box and with a subscription to Netflix have all the streamed media access we could wish for. Local TV, endless movies and docos etc. Good bye to Sky at last.

We bought the Dish one as we have an older TV. Very happy with it.
