after many months of hearing good things about the les davis isolation devices, i got a box of the latest discs.
this new version is now square cut, the originals were round, and of a new formulation where one square disc is said to be the equivalent of two round discs stacked together.
they are recommended for use under components that generate or store mechanical/electrical energy such as turntables, amps, cd players etc.
first application was under the power supply for my technics sp10 turntable.
results were promising - backgrounds were quieter, not that they were noticeably noisy before.
imaging sharpened up, perspective moved forward, i could hear more detail, the sound was more exciting.
next they went under the feet of my pureaudio one amplifier.
similar results to the power supply but moreso !
however after 30 minutes or so i started to notice a fundamental change to my system.
individual aspects like imaging, dynamics were highlighted in a manner that de-constructed the sound to a degree that was getting uncomfortable to listen to. the nice natural bouncy rhythym and slightly warm, tube-like tone i enjoyed was gone.
the presntation was more hi-fi, mechanical, analytical.
removing the discs from the amp and turntable power supply, i used them under my cambridge 752 disc player and marantz st17 fm tuner, where they replaced black diamond racing pyramid composite cones.
results were similar to the first audition.
initially impressive but ultimately a little fatiguing.
in my system they performed best when used only under a source component, i preferred the amplifer au naturel on it's own machined feet.
for now the black diamonds remain my choice of isolation device.
