My name is Colin from the UK.My specific interest is in Hi Fi and I have a fair amount of good quality equipment that I have collected over the 50yrs of being involved. My mission at the moment is to tie down the production date of a Koetsu Signature Rosewood cartridge from it's serial no. 13527 that I bought for £250 (second hand) in the mid 90's. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Welcome to the forums, Colin - kilnmanI have owned a few Koetsus (Rosewood, Rosewood Signature) & the serial numbers are a bit confusing (to me anyway). Here's some scant information, that is possibly not of much help to you: A Koetsu Red/Rosewood purchased s/hand in ~1987 with the ser. no. 11756. This was a modern 'short body' Rosewood, with gold plated pins & no inserts in the baseplate mounting holes. This cartridge was sent to be rebuilt by Koetsu in the early 2000s & returned as a Rosewood Signature - keeping the original wood body & mounting baseplate, but with new magnet-coils-stylus generator. Rebuilding is routinely performed by Koetsu & this is one reason why ser. no. is not always an accurate guide to the age of a Koetsu cartridge. In around '92, for a short while, I had in my possession a Rosewood with ser. no. 49258. Another example is a Koetsu Rosewood Signature which was purchased new in 1992, with a very low ser. no. 065 (silver plated pins, holes with inserts). All the above had Rosewood bodies with 'tapered' bottom profiles - so even body shape cannot be a reliable guide to identifying 'Signature' models. The best source of information I would suggest is Melvin Ang, distributor Koetsu S.E. Asia. He has dealt with Koetsu (Sugano family) in Japan for over 25 years, to my knowledge.

Hi Colin, welcome. I’m in the UK too, in the southwest. Unfortunately can’t help you with Koetsu S/Ns though.
