This notification just arrived in my inbox from NZ Post YouShop: " From 1 December 2019, all items purchased from overseas and shipped to your YouShop address will have 15% Goods & Services Tax (GST) applied. GST will be charged on the total value of the goods and YouShop services purchased. "

Yes just get pinged the other day with a shipment of car parts (suspension rebuild kit for a 1950 Chevrolet if you are interested) from the US. Freight was expensive enough but then another $200 plus bill for customs clearance charges.

One of the stated aims of the NZ Govt when introducing this change was to "make it a level playing field for NZ retailers". I buy from UK retailers that won't deliver to NZ, pay 20% VAT and ship via YouShop. Soon I will have to pay both VAT and GST, a total of 35% sales tax. That's not a level playing field!

What sort of items for example, won't ship from UK to NZ?

Just got the same email.
I use YouShop to save on postage costs, rather than because the stores won't ship to NZ. With records it can be a bit dicey, as YouShop can sometimes repackage them to save costs. But their repackaging doesn't look like it is sympathetic to avoiding bent corners.
In any case, the packages have to go through more postal depots, which means more people handling the records. Also, parcels are always opened by them, which means even more chances of damage.
And then there's the extra time delay.

I have used YouShop only for non-vinyl record shipments, from UK & from USA - not that many, however. Mostly to save on postage. Once when Amazon wouldn't ship that brand to NZ. I have never had them 'consolidate' more than one item into a single package. Mostly have been happy with the result.

What sort of items for example, won't ship from UK to NZ? The won't ship to NZ problem has mainly to do with some Amazon affiliated sellers, both in the US and UK. Items include vacuum tubes, audio related DIY tech books and a special photo paper I regularly buy. I do use YouShop because they are cheaper sometimes. A recent attempted book purchase from an Amazon affiliated seller would not ship to NZ, so I ordered the book from the seller direct, but USPS shipping price was over $50 (seller insisted on a tracked signed for service) so I got it from Amazon post-free to YouShop and then $22 to NZ.

Just got stung with duty and biosecurity fees for several items, two from youshop arriving the same day at customs. The combined total was over the $400 threshold but all goods came from different sellers. And one from a different country. But they still combined them as a single dutiable amount ;(

" The value of an import is based on all items imported by a person or company at one time, and is not limited to a single transaction. If several items, purchased separately by the same person or company, arrive in New Zealand at the same time, the value may be combined which could result in charges becoming payable. Yes, they quoted me that and added "This is done in accordance with section 85 of the Customs and Excise Regulations Act 1996."
This has only happened once before for me but that was when the parcel was from the same company and split in two boxes which I can understand.
It does say "the value MAY be combined", and they've never combined items unless they've come from the same seller. Maybe they're gearing up for the GST change in December, as they now have a dedicated Ecommerce support division.

This message alert today from Youshop: " 30 Days until GST Changes " With a link to an IRD page: " GST changes: Q&As for NZ consumers " A snippet: Consumers in New Zealand will pay GST on goods valued at or below NZ$1,000 when they place an order with an overseas supplier.
This means from 1 December 2019, consumers will generally:
- pay a little more for most goods that cost less than NZ$400, because GST will now be charged.
- pay less for most goods that cost between NZ$400 and NZ$1,000, because tariff duty and cost recovery charges will be removed for parcels or consignments below NZ$1,000.
Note: Cost recovery charges collected by Customs include Customs’ import entry transaction fee and the Ministry for Primary Industries’ associated biosecurity system entry levy.
