The MAGNEPAN LRS (Little Ribbon Speaker) is the new (released a couple of months ago) entry level loudspeaker from MAGNEPAN. It is a 2-way, all-'quasi-ribbon' panel, replacing the MMGi (ribbon-planar magnetic panel). Dimensions are 1.22m H x 0.37m W x 0.255m thick (around 0.16m shorter than the MAGNEPAN .7). Sensitivity is only 86dB/W with a low impedance 4 ohm load - so you need reasonably powerful amplification, say minimum 40-50wpc at 4 ohms. STEREOPHILE's Herb Reichert highly recommends the Magnepan LRS. " ...its levels of microscopic detail, accurate timbre, and pure-water transparency are unprecedented at anywhere near $650/pair. "

Steve Guttenberg Audiophiliac: With the Schitt Vidar amplifier (US$699) - " Killer combination... an incredible match! " " this is an impressive speaker...massively transparent. There's nothing, nothing, nothing that you can get at $650 that can touch it.... closer to the sound of an electrostatic speaker! " " Imaging is closer to life-size. "

I was struck by how similar they look to the SMGa of 30 years ago...

Magnepan owners will be familiar with all this, but NBT's Jay (Soulsik) provides a guide for positioning your Magnepan LRS panels for best sound: The traditional way of setting up Magnepans: - FRONT WALL distance to rear to the LRS panel should be at least 3' (~0.9m) - ideally 6' (1.8m) - bass strength will be affected. - TWEETERS can be configured on the inner or outer sides of the (mirror imaged) pair of panels. Inner tweeter config. gives a better single-listener 'sweet-spot'. Outer tweeter config. gives a wider 'sweet-spot' (or may work better in a narrow room). - PANEL TILT - vertical (plumb) panel (no rear tilt) tends to give a slightly faster, quicker, more crisp sound. - LISTENING DISTANCE - suggest at least 2x the tweeter-to-tweeter spacing distance - gives increased depth & bass response. An alternative (Jay's way) Magnepan set-up:- On the LONG WALL, placement of panels in the room. - LISTENING DISTANCE same as tweeter-to-tweeter spacing - ie. equilateral triangle. This latter arrangement gives (i) a 'fuller body' to the sound (ii) greater intimacy (iii) better imaging.

That's really a bargain: electrostatics sound amazing, personally I really really liked them (Martin Logans & Quads specifically) and I would have gone with them if it wasn't for size (I don't think my wife would allow me to have them in our living room): I thought transparency & detail was on another level vs most other things I've auditioned. It's amazing that you can now go into electrostatics for just $650, combined with a decent amplifier this is probably the best entry level system in the market right now.

correction, maggies are not electrostatic, they are magnetic planars,
imagine a conventional cone speaker that has been run over by a steamroller.
