... and Fireflies! These provincial beauties caught my wandering eye. www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/home-audio/amplifiers-tuners/auction-2221478034.htmThe classic Tom Lewitt pre-power combo, and a 30 year old Marantz CD player that features the desirable TDA1541 chipset and the CDM1 drawer, mated to a pair of pregnant penguins. I’ve seen evidence on the ‘net of Tom Lewitt modifying the crossover on the DM6, but suspect these ones are an un-fettled proposition. Received wisdom is bountiful, but do we have first-hand experience we can share about any of these classics?

Had a mate that raved about the preamp (30 years ago...). Never heard one of his power amps. Marantz CD player is somewhat legendary, but id be cautious about paying big coin for a 30 year old CD player ?

Had the DM6 specially brought back from overseas for me with a local firm, the days when you had to import speakers.Replaced the DM2a's.
Didn't last long as I listened to a pair of Celestion SL6's a friend was selling and bought them. And a Lambert subwoofer table,Which I lined with egg trays to tighten up the bass. Later bought his SL6S's, which I still have.
The DM6 was a bit big for a caravan anyhow!

i saw a lewitt power amp at wt audio in lower hutt a few days ago.
ditto on cartridgeman's reservations on the marantz, a very nice cdp but at that age factor in a contingency fund for repairs.
i had a pair of sl6 too. one of the first pairs in nz, straight out of then importer alec isbey's little citroen ! great speakers that can handle power but not abuse, i remember seeing a pair at sound expression that had melted voice coils, the result of several hours of party mode on the end of a pair of bridge perreaux.

Thanks for all the comments, chaps.
I agree, the CD player would probably suit a budding “lampizator”, but quite a high risk proposition.
The DM6 aren’t the high efficiency, tube friendly classic speaker I hoped they’d be. I s’pose Beeman’s reaction says it all really. Meh!
I expect the amps are the real prize. Interesting that they don’t seem to have the same following as some other local manufacturers? I remember them being sold alongside Counterpoint hybrid amps at the Slipped Disc in mt Eden in the early 90s. But never met anyone who owned one, that I know of...

Agree on those SL6s, very nice. Remind me a bit of the Epos Es14 for some reason. Was Robin Marshall involved in Celestion at all? Or was it Mordaunt Short?

Chris Ball was involved with Celestion, which is one reason I bought my Image 412/2's without hearing them first.

Tom Lewitt is still about, (or at least was when I spoke to him a couple of years back), lives in P Nth or New Plymouth IIRC, my North Island Geography is a bit lacking im afraid, North of here on that other island. Is he a member here ? Didnt know that he ever sold anything through the shops, thought he was more of an underground friend of a friend type of manufacturer...

loved my time with the sl6
i wasn't quite as enamoured of it's successors, sl6s, sl600/700, sl12
the magic didn't return until the celestion model 3 in the 90s.
