At Owen's request and after mulling it over... here is the requested thread.
Several years ago, I bought from Gortnipper (I remembered) this wonderful preamp. In among the stuff he sent, was a printed article (since lost) of the original post on DIYAUDIO.
In which he lays out, in a neat article, his requirements for the stage and then proceeds to take the reader through the design. I enjoyed his comments and his cavalier approach to some accepted axioms of design - it appealed to the rebel in me.
He does not mention sensitivity or any specifications for the device; it is designed for a low output cartridge, so has high gain and therefore is not suitable for MM carts (which is a shame as I'd love to hear my Decca London through it). To those who say I can modify it, my answer is that that would require some effort on my part and my life at this point in time is not conducive to that sort of effort.
In action the stage is all that SY says it is and is an excellent device for me. I have no idea whether this has been modified.
