finally got around to hooking up a turntable to my now-no- new marantz sr6012 avr and listening to some vinyl surround sound.
playback chain;
technics sl7 + ortofon tmc200 + ortofon t5 transformers > marantz sr6012 > energy reference 22 + rvs-2
primary motivator was my nz harvest copy of dark side of the moon - a rare copy with "quad" inscribed in the dead wax.
on a regular stereo it sounded like a typical nz pressing - a bit noisy, compressed, harsh, bright, phasey, overall a fatiguing listen.
easily the worst copy of dsotm i own, even the cd sounds better (albeit the sweet 10th anniversary version).
it was pretty much the same with the marantz in stereo mode.
in dolby surround (latest digital version that simulates an atmos soundfield), the sound improved immensely.
it was less bright, more open, with a bigger, slightly diffuse soundstage.
there was an element of instruments popping up behind you but in music like dsotm it's not as offensive as it would be with classical or jazz.
surround effects were actually quite subtle compared to my dsotm surround sacd.
overall an interesting experiment with good but not compelling results.
