I know some of you are very knowledgable about this title, I have a simple question. Or is it?
My pressing is this one here, a French double LP on Philips. Although it was released in 2000, the recordings are (c) 1966.
Starker's most famous reading, released on three sides by Mercury, Speakers Corner et al comprises recordings of the suites made in 1963 and 1965, so as Philips and Mercury were under the same umbrella would mine be the same recordings as the SR3-9016 ones? My run-out groove information is very long and printed, saying Polygram at the end.
Any clues? Cheers, Dom

"In terms of price and collectability the Starker discs are in a different league. The originals were made by the celebrated Mercury Living Presence label, which some rank alongside Decca for quality of sound. Collectors usually go for the 3-LP boxed set (SR3-9016), a choice of the standard maroon or gold promotional labels (which fetch between £500 and £2,000 at auction) and are – needless to say – rare. The set was re-issued on the Mercury Golden Imports label and then remastered by Philips (who owned Mercury) and compressed onto two discs. These, and especially the latter, are – according to received opinion – of inferior sound quality, so enter Speakers Corner, re-pressing its 2004 transfer." Written by Rob Pennock

Thanks for that I'm guessing I will never get the opportunity to hear the Mercurys so this will do nicely in the meantime.

the seller seems to have put in the bare minimum of effort into that listing.
for $1500 it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect at least confirmation of country of pressing and some decent photos.

Who'd a thunk!
The TM one says "good" condition, though in record-grading terms that really means scrap value. I doubt these are, but all the same ... good luck! D

Shiiite... This face is familiar... Some may recall I inherited 'yards' of classical albums from our cobber Maxgate. There were Starker discs included. Unsure if any were Bach though. I'll take comfort that I don't know the music/artist and in mid Dec '18, the remainder (est. 150 LPs, box sets etc) were delivered to Rummage at the Dunedin refuse centre. I hope the mateys that poured through the boxes on 3 x deliveries were rewarded...
