It must be the season for plinth building so here is a brief thread on the plinth I am building for Dom for has Garrard 301. Nothing revolutionary here, just following the tried and recommended theme of multi layered timber and substantial weight. The finished 4 layers weigh in at 12 kg and are made using my preferred timber, finger jointed beech. I like this product as it is a relatively soft wood, so should have low resonance, and being made up of multiple pieces joined together I feel provides a difficult path for vibration and resonance to travel through. Besides it looks very nice with alternating layers to expose the end grain. No fancy computer cutting machines here, just the use of a bench saw, and then my own jigsaw, belt sander and orbital sander. Oh, and lots of sweat !!!! More photos as we progress.

A quick lick of light oak stain to get an idea of how the grain will look.

Laminated Beech looks nice. Hard to beat real wood. (PS. Graham - we recommend using imgur instead of imgbb for posting images.)

Here are a couple of shots of the finished plinth with the 301 installed and being given a test run. Total silence from the motor and idler and nice full sound using my Denon DL110 for the test. The 301 is one of Tony's excellent restorations.

We are still deciding what sort of feet to put under the plinth so am open to suggestions particularly from other 301 users with this type of solid plinth. At present it is just sitting on 3 wooden blocks with felt facing which are really just furniture protectors. Oh, don't bother suggesting spikes as I think they are bollocks !!

I trained as a chef, gunna have to restrain myself from chopping something on that.
This project is bringing back to life something which has lain dormant since the early '80s and was owned by my Uncles since the mid-60s. I'm thrilled that the rebirth is down to the expertise of two members here. Highly esteemed craftsmen, both.
I'm tingly with anticipation although it will eventually look different, probably mahogany veneered or maybe even covered in black leather. (Only for mono Doors pressings.) Dom
