Although MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for Triton X-100 generally say 'low toxicity' for humans, some warn, depending on concentration, moderate to acute toxicity respectively for fish & 'aquatic invertebrates'. Also note that we are using this stuff diluted 1/1000 for cleaning & also, unlike common household detergents (washing powder, dish detergent, household cleaners, shampoos/conditioners, etc etc) it has no additives as often found in those products (eg. disinfectant chemicals, 'fragrances' additives, water softeners, sudsing agents, chlorine, ammonia , bleaches, etc etc). However, if you wish to use an arguably ecologically better alternative, one of our US Cleaner kit users has advised that Tween 20 is a suitable safer replacement for the Triton X100. I see that Tween 20 (rebranded Polysorbate 20) is available locally (Auckland, NZ) - and is cheaper than Triton X-100... www.gonative.co.nz/shop/Ingredients/EmulsifiersSolubilisers/Polysorbate+20.html

When my Photoflo runs out I'll try some of that Polysorbate.
Just run a few of my fountain pens through the US cleaner. Does a great job of cleaning old dried ink out of the feeds/sections!

It's come to our attention that the records can contact the ends of the SS tank if the end clearance is too small & if the SS kit frame is not a TIGHT immovable fit to the tanks sides. If the SS kit frame moves with vibration, the records can contact the end of the tank & stop rotating. In such incidences, the rotating motor can drive the spindle out of the motor. So, we recommend : 1) Checking that you have tight-fitting top frames - if not, gently bend the flanges inward (eg. on the floor, with a block of wood). to get a tighter fit. 2) For good measure, lift both the motor plate & the opposite bearing plate, upward (as shown below) so that the records sit a little higher - raise fluid level a few mm if you feel necessary.

Prof. Massimo Dadone in Italy has made a nice video of his Ultrasonic Record Cleaning setup - using our 'kit'. 'Max' has a DIY record vacuum & also integrates a fluid filter system, to take out detritus from the tank fluid. He runs the filter only at the end of the cleaning cycle, to minimise dirt residue on the cleaned records. I think this is not too much hassle & I will revisit my aquarium pump filter system which I bought & tested briefly a while back. Max likes Pink Floyd

Encouraged by Max's setup (above) in Italy, I decided to re-rig up my aquarium pump again & run it for the last few mins of each cleaning cycle (25 mins), - as per Max's thinking. The filters in this (~$30) pump are not down in the 0.5-1.0 micron region of say a carbon drinking water cartridge, but the fluid is significantly cleaner. It does however require another 2L or so of fluid mix & the tank lid no longer fits to prevent fluid evaporation when not in use - I just cover it with a cloth for now. (Excuse messy temporary desktop setup.)

Peeved! The Max video won’t load for me! One of the reasons I think streaming will not work for me, is we are on Rural Broadband over the copper wires for phone. The maximum speed for our line is 5mbps, and since we are.about 4km from the “box” speed is down to about 2mbps when it reaches us.
Fibre won’t be on our road in my lifetime.
Back on topic, finished renovations in my shed (insulated and lined ceiling) and back into using my us cleaner. Am always impressed with the result. I always vacuum dry with my manual Nitty Gritty, should do an A - B test one day, vacuum dry versus drip dry.

Oh that's a bit of a downer, sub. However, you'll have copiously more space for shed & much more... than most urban dwellers.

Oh that's a bit of a downer, sub . However, you'll have copiously more space for shed & much more... than most urban dwellers. Thanks, Owen. At least what we have is 100% better than no broadband up until about 5-6 years ago! We had to subscribe to Spark for wireless broadband over their 3G network. Even that was a hassle as we could not get Spark cell phone reception (Vodafone ok but patchy, depends on where in house you:are), and we had to install a Yaggi aerial aimed at the Spark tower. It was expensive and we had to be very careful we did not go over the very small number of gigs in the plan - we used dial up for non urgent or routine matters!

Just a couple of pics of the Ultrasonic machine cleaning 7" 45 singles. Drop the side plates a few mm & add a little fluid.

Anyone have a source for these machines that will ship to NZ and be the right voltage?

Most are 110V or else very expensive, eg almost double the cost of those above.

They're refunding me as they say they don't ship to NZ, despite what their listing says. Knew $7 shipping was too good to be true, but hey gave it a go. The search continues.

I have a DIY solution, which I built a few years back. Much along the same lines as yourselves. It does not include a filter, though. Memo to self, investigate filter.

oh, yes. I forgot (looking at your link) I tend to wash 1 or 2 records at a time.
And yours looks very good, by the way.

Jon - can you recall which Aliexpress seller you bought from? I'm reluctant to go there unless no other suitable alternative.
Citroen - did you get one in the end?

No. All seem to be around the $300+ mark and while mine is still going (albeit not at full power) I'll keep looking.

Thanks anyway Jon.
Cheers Owen - they are showing out of stock and it looks like the same seller that Citroen tried buying off that didn't ship to NZ.

Mine died over a year ago and I took it to a guy who said he could fix it. He was one of those strongly into recycling and repairing electronic stuff. He couldn't. So I checked out ali-express again and saw that the prices were higher. So then I went to alibaba and went to their buying and leads section where I filled something out and people sent me quotes. I also noticed that some of the units give a limit of 30mins in the specs and some give longer so I went for one that was longer - 99mins. It was much quieter in operation too. I ended up getting a "DK 600D" for a lower price that anything on Ali-express. The down side is I am still getting quotes but not all that often and all I do is delete them. The quality is a big step up from the previous one.
