Well, I am speechless. But not surprised any more. tonyd may be best placed to comment on value.

Don't blame me ! I just serviced it, I didn't value it.

Having seen it at Graham's, I'd say the plinth looks better in real life. Worth every penny I say, as a biased 401 owner! The owner must be deaf if he prefers his LP12 to this...

So what do you think IS a realistic price?
On the low side? 401 - $1000 Plinth - $400 Arm - $350 Cart - $200 TOTAL $1950?
On the very high side? 401 - $1500 Plinth - $700 Arm - $500 Cart - $350 TOTAL - $3050?

Count me in as deaf too then as I would way rather have an LP12 !

$2k max. for $5k it should be mint like a tonyd rebuild.
garrard owners seem to invariably have an over0inflated sense of what their tables are worth.
contrast with technics sp owners. there was a nice one recently for $1600 ?

Yep. Another deaf dumb f**ker! joking It really depends on which version LP12. An early one is light years different to a more modern one. A (1965 to 1976) 401 to my ears easily beats a similar era LP12.

Compare this to a 301, which seems to command almost twice the price of a 401.
The 401 aesthetics is not for everyone and so the 301 is more popular. But sonically, if anything the 401 is similar if not superior.
That Sp10 did tempt me...

the sp10 was unsold ... agree about 301 v. 401 any loricraft 501 in nz ?

Must tell my better half that mine's worth $6000 now! Way better condition than that one.

Aesthetically, I think I prefer the 401

How good are those SME 30029 arms compared to more modern designs
|
Post by Graham on Nov 29, 2018 9:06:08 GMT 12
How good are those SME 30029 arms compared to more modern designs IMO they are wonderfully engineered arms, BUT they are designed for medium to high compliance cartridges. They are not designed for the currently fashionable low compliance cartridges. The knife edge bearings and 'swiss cheese' headshell are not rigid enough. However with a medium to high compliance cartridge IMO they are excellent, plus they look period correct on a vintage turntable.

I think some of these guys are quite simply in dreamsville... they have a tt that isnt rare or in new condition based on the photos. Having said that it isnt a crime to be asking what ever... whether or not you get a sale is another thing all together. Case and point...401 that has been on TM for ever for $4010... clearly he likes paying re list fees cos he will never sell it!

Had bids to $505, reserve met, and then decided to withdraw auction for 24 hours? Rather unorthodox selling behaviour. I am surprised if TradeMe allowed it.

all a bit dodgy ?
caveat emptor

Maybe im being a bit thick, but whats the difference between an auction finishing on a Monday or a Sunday ? Is he hoping for more actionm if it finishes on a Monday ?

He could have altered the finish time for an additional fee through My Trademe in his account.
