i have used colin in brightwater, tasman twice. the first time the usb board on my AMR CD-77 had died and needed replacing. it spent 6wks sitting on a bench in chch before being returned as a mission impossible. colin was recommended to me by the AMR distributor and i was very impressed. great communication and great job.
the 2nd time was quite different. i have a vintage Sony TA-4650 integrated. it has the v-fets. wonderful but scary. i decided i wanted to keep it for the rest of my life so i sent it off to colin for a refurb. inside was 40yrs of burnt on dust. everything was removed, cleaned, replaced if necessary, and reassembled. another terrific job.
the only complaint i have is that he isn't in chch.

Colin at clear image audio has done a heap for me over the years, he is only about 10 minutes down the road from work so quite handy for me. I actually saw your Sony integrated whilst it was at Colins, he was very impressed by how it sounded. He recently fixed up the matching tuner for me. Has also worked on most of my amps past and present including a Kenwood KA4000, Luxman l55a, Copland CSA14, and also gave my ESL57's a birthday and fitted new gas discharge arrestors in a protection circuit. He also built my new valve set up, which comprises a valve preamp and EL34 Triode valve monoblocks, all valve rectified, Dual valve phono stages with MC being handled by a Lundahl SUT inbuilt, headphone stage etc. Matches the quads superbly. Great bloke.

Wow it's nice to have had a page created for you from satisfied people whom I've done some work for! Generally they become my friends too. Yes my website should be up and running shortly, most likely ClearImageAudioNZ.co.nz. I have been a tech for 28 years now and started in Melbourne at Trevor Lees Audio. I now live in Brightwater near Nelson and am continuing my passion for audio. I have currently made a passive preamp, a phono stage using the Sonic Imagery Labs discrete op-amps and a class A headphone amp using germanium transistors for nice warm sound. In addition I have custom made valve amplifiers and preamps. My first phono preamp was made in 1990 and built in a glass box. Ian (guitardude) your EL34 amps run in ultralinear Class A, not triode. Ultralinear operation approaches triode operation in terms of low distortion but achieves greater efficiency. It gives the input stage an easier time too, so that it generates less distortion and greater frequency response than driving triode-connected pentodes. Roger (rocl) thanks for the kind words, I loved your old Sony TA-4650 Vfet amp. The poweramp sounded great so I bought some Vfets to play with. A resulting poweramp is in the pipeline and should match my other solid state units. Regards, Colin.

Welcome colinf - not sure if you are making to order or custom-making only, but if/when you are selling your products, you will see that we also have a Retailers, Distributors, Manufacturers section where you can show your products, if you wish. Owen

Must get my dead MF over there at some stage and get an official prognosis. Colin did a service for me on an old Yammy a few years back and I certainly appreciated the difference...

Owen Hi Owen, Thankyou, and thankyou for the advice. At the moment I am making my own stuff to order, also custom designing things, and thus not concentrating too heavily on repairs but if you need me to look at something I will attempt it. But no disc devices! I am an amplifier specialist. I should show my stuff in the R-D-M section you mention.

What's wrong with it? Not a Nu Vista or anything quite so exciting... A good old value for money A3 but I suspect she won't be worth the fix. I've fried the left channel and the smell suggested it was quite the burn. Haven't even looked tbh. Plugged in the Copland and away we went... The A3 is far preferable into the load I have to drive...

Hmmmm... the question must be asked - who the hell is going to work on my gear now? Current amp weighs in at 30+ kg unboxed... shipping could be both dangerous and expensive... ideas? I’m at the top of the south...
