I think I have just seen the ultimate in bullshit marketing that makes Linns efforts fade into insignificance ! AV World are advertising a headphone system for the outrageous price $92,000. OK it comes with its own valve amplifier but I would be surprised if there are more than a few hundred dollars worth of parts involved. The only people that could even consider spending only a fraction of this inflated price are probably half deaf anyway !!! And we wonder why young people are not attracted to this hobby.
OK Rant over.

Yep that's the one. OMG don't click on the Buy Now !
It gets better, ( or worse ) I've just noticed that there is even a box to indicate how many you want to buy.

Or contact Sennheiser's Concierge Service: en-nz.sennheiser.com/sennheiser-he-1Here Darko actually takes a brief listen: darko.audio/2016/05/sennheisers-he-1-endgame-or-what/What Hifi reviewed the UKP37.5k Orpheus predecessor model of this HE-1, in 2015: Their verdict: " We’re not actually sure Sennheiser even has an audience in mind, because in a way, this isn’t for the public.
The new Orpheus is for Sennheiser to see what it can do, and it's impossible not to acknowledge the boundaries that the new Orpheus pushes even if we might not be able to conceive of ever buying a pair.
Should you be excited about this? Yes, in the same way that one is excited about a new rocket-powered car breaking the land speed record. What’s more exciting, however, are the possibilities created by such a project, as this high-end tech will no doubt (slowly) trickle down to consumer products. "

I don't think even our left leaning government would go for that one. But hey, maybe I should talk to Winnie, after all he got me my Gold Card !!

One of my colleagues left the AV World flier on my desk last week.
His gentle dig at me, knowing my headphone purchases. "A bargain for you"

I seen to remember Colin Walkington offering me the chance to get it's predecessor, the HE90 for a mere NZ$20,000, seems like a bargain now.

I heard the HE-1 briefly at the Melbourne hifi show. They were very nice. The Dac is built in making you need one less component. But you can get to-die-for electrostatic sound from a setup of Stax SR-009s earspeakers and hybrid energizer (in electrostatic speak) for a fifth the cost!

I'm surprised this is the first time this has been mentioned. www.stereonet.co.nz/features/a-night-with-sennheisers-he-1-headphonesBeing the author of said feature I can only offer one mans perspective. Take a guy (me), who just; • sold his family home • purchased an apartment (OMG what can I listen to now - panic moment) • Has always been crazy about well engineered audio gear • who's last 2 house purchases were significantly influenced by the HiFi room • sold his existing Hifi to start again (New RRP - just a tad over $100K) • had no budget concerns (at that time) • has been "invested" in HiFi for over 40 years Was I actually tempted - YES. Why - why not. I liked them, sometimes it can be as simple as that. Happy days

hi steve, oh to have a blank slate what did you get ? has apartment living meant the stereo lives in a shared space or did you get one of those mega condos with a dedicated listening room ?
edit; i forgot you had an intro post a few months ago !

I think the HE-1 could be viewed as an intriguing investment as well as aural and visual pleasure. Their predecessor Orpheus HE90 became one apparently. You could spend $92K on a luxury car that would depreciate spectacularly, or on this Formula 1 of headphones. They are most likely made in limited numbers so when production ends I suspect the value of them will only go up if kept in pristine order. sjk, if you were tempted, and you can, do! I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Hi yes, my intro post pretty much summaries where I’m at. Despite the fact that I’m a Scotsman, I’m really enjoying the Kiwi Hifi story, there’s something organic about th e gear that’s locally produced. also no mega condo, unless of course 95 Sq meters is considered mega these days. But the lounge is a good size and shape for Hifi, I just need to be considerate about those around me. Fortunately the walls seem to have excellent insulation and there have been no funny looks or daggers in the foyer ...so far 😄

I don’t think you’ll regret it. I completely agree and if noise transfer had been a real concern I would have seriously looked at an Uber headphone rig. Fortunately I think I can enjoy a modestly powerful speaker based system so there is no need to down that road.
