I know there have been previous threads on the old Audio Enz site about appropriate chairs for a music area but I'd like to hear any feedback on the subject. At the moment I'm looking at two different models, an IMG Molde or a Stressless Consul. Both are at good sale prices at the moment and either should be an improvement on my old Lazy Boy. I've test tried both and could live with either but the Stressless is about 10cm narrower around the shoulder/head area which I guess could have a bearing on how the music sounds to me. When I listen to music I'm in an upright position however watching movies or under headphones reclining comes in. An experiences with these brands or models appreciated. Stressless in black below, IMG Brown.

What budget price are those, cooksferry? I have a Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman (replica I hasten to add). There are many 'Chinese knock-off replicas' of the Eames & you need to look carefully - Nood used to sell a pretty good quality version of the Vitra Eames. What I like about it: - It's not too high around the head(ears) area - this affects the sound. - The leather is nice in all seasons. - The large armrests are handy for notes, papers etc, - The chair swivels - handy for in-chair listening position fine adjustments - the 'springy' back adds comfort. - the Ottoman of course is nice for the feet & big enough for record covers & other miscell bits. It is also, of course, happens to be a proven, iconic piece of furniture design. (This is not me )

Don't think anyone down here stocks that line and I really don't want to purchase anything without a test run. Budget, well the Stressless is $2199 and the IMG I can get for $1999.Like to keep in that range.

Audition essential. Really wanted an Eames chair a few years ago. Found a store selling them, and when I sat in it discovered I did not fit! I am 6’2” and 14 stone. It was too small for me!

i can attest to the comfort of the eames replica. Looks like there are good and pretty awful replicas out there. The chair looks quite large, maybe bigger dimensions than my current Lazy Boy? Did a joint expedition this morning with my furniture expert who thought the Stressless model (medium) I was looking at was a bit too small and the IMG model more comfortable. To get the large Stressless is $600 more than the IMG which has to be considered. Love to try a Eames replica but a 5 hour round trip to possibly try one is off putting, especially in winter.

Now without trying to insight bad feeling here or a general forum fight.. it really annoys me that the replicas exist! The firms who make these and there are many have stolen i/p from the Eames firm. How they are allowed to call it anything like an Eames Lounge Chair really browns me off. Clearly there was no brand protection in the 1950s when they first appeared. Eames as a firm are one of the most ripped off furniture firms in the world!!... ok rant over.

any design protection under copyright, patent would have run out by now ?
$1500nzd vs. $6k usd would tip most people in favour of the replica.

Surely there is continued protection if you are paying for it! McDs,Apple,Cocao Cola would sue you to Mars and back if you tampered with their ip!!!

from google questions... in the us design patents run for 15 years, utility patents 20 years.
some interesting reading
ironically, the eames wanted their designs to be available to the masses.

That last link is interesting reading Michael. Is your chair the same as the one Nood advertises ?

Away from Eames replicas....
I have had my Stressless since 2009, a retirement present from me to me. Although expensive It has been a great buy. Extremely comfortable. I have added the sidetable which is where the remotes live. The leather is in great condition, a little shinier than when new, but no signs of wear anywhere and no colour fading. I can recommend.

No i'm not about to post photo's of chairs or enter into the original vs replica debate, but would like to raise the audio issue I encountered in my new room. Once the vinyl and the Hifi were all moved in then I moved up the 2 1950s rolled arm chairs that I had wanted to use in the room. Alas the extra furniture in the room deadened the room too much as they sucked up all the top end. I then tried 2 60's style armchairs but the effect was still there though improved top end. Hence I needed to source a more open and less well furnished chair. From NOOD I found an open frame basket weave design that worked quite well, but have now replaced this with 2 slightly less comfortable (well more difficult to get in and out of to be honest), swedish deck chairs. The point im trying to make is that the furniture can have a huge effect on the sound so be sure to bear this in mind.

My understanding is that: Eames licensed Herman Miller in USA in the mid-40s to manufacture the #670/671 Lounge Chair & Ottoman. Vitra were sub-licensed in 1957 to produce them for Europe & the Middle East.

I have a long-time audio pal who insists on using only a minimalist, non-upholstered, open-frame chair as a listening chair - only one allowed in the room.

that's rather anti-social
cooks; no fancy chairs here, just a couple of armchairs (one for a guest albeit way off axis) rescued from old lounge suites

I had briefly considered something along those lines but my room is small so wanting to keep at least the appearance of size down and I do like to recline, feet up when I'm running a movie or reading.
