As mentioned in another thread, I have been 'commissioned' to build a pair of plinths for 2 Technics SP10 turntables. One will be kept by the owner and the other eventually offered for sale. It was felt that as the SP10 is known to be silent and smooth in operation it was not necessary to build a massive plinth such as is required for idler drive turntables like the 301 and 401 Garrards. The plinths are made from just 2 layers of finger jointed Beech glued and screwed together with the end grain high lighted across the front surface. Dimensions are 570mm wide by 415mm deep and 54mm thick. Photos show the configuration with mounting position for a 12 inch arm and just one application of Danish Oil to bring up the varied and contrasting grains. Another two or three coats will eventually be applied. Some sort of feet will be added for a bit of isolation but also to clear the wires exiting underneath.

Not yet Owen. Everything is on hold until we source a second 12 inch arm and the motor control electronics are sorted.

what's wrong with the electronics ?

The two turntables were bought without the separate PSU units. The owner is designing and building his own.

Ah OK - unusual that the Power Units are missing. Most of the speed control electronics are inside the TT, the Power Unit provides 3 DC supplies.

Here's a couple of shots of the first plinth that is pretty much finished. just needs a few more coats of Danish Oil and some feet. The owner wanted a low profile look rather than a monolithic lump of wood !!

Not dissimilar in form factor to michaelw's SP10 plinth.

mine is single layer solid jarrah, about 46mm thick.
ugly but functional.
graham's has a nicer finish.

I like the slim profile of both these plinths for the deep SP-10 chassis.

agreed. i'm not a fan of the overbuilt, box plinths. then there's the small band of sp10 users who eschew a plinth and use the turntable naked with an armpod.

We supplied a Terminator arm mount to a chap in Texas who has an SP-10 & who plans to mount the arm on a 'pod' alongside. We had to trim a bit off the LHS of the mount in order for the mount/pod to sit real close to the SP-10's square top.

i don't have the real estate for a pod

Finally tracked down an SME 3012 arm to install on the plinth. It was always the plan to keep this turntable simple and 'vintage' looking with a low profile minimalistic plinth. All that remains is to find some suitable feet, mainly to provide clearance for the wiring to exit underneath. The owner has built a suitable PSU for it and will be pleased to finally finish the project.

some simple wooden blocks for support ?

In a moment of wild enthusiasm the owner ordered from the UK a beautiful plinth for his SP10 so I have just finished transferring the bits over to it. It appears to made from multiple layers wood,( maybe plywood or even mdf ) with layers of alloy between, and finished with walnut veneer. We suspect it was really designed for a 10 inch arm as on the supplied armboard a 9 inch would be hard against the turntable body, and the 12 inch Project as you can see, is right in the rh rear corner. It is massively heavy and looks lovely.

Looks lovely indeed! You just need Cambrian Plastics to make a lid that fits those curves.

Looks mighty spiffing Yes, all the Technics tonearms were 10" (approx) arms. As were many (most?) of the Japanese arms of that era & tonearms used with the SP-10 in commercial radio studios. (But 9" arms will work, eg. michaelw's SME 345.) Do let us know what the owner thinks this new plinth setup sound like.
