I recently picked up an MC60 Moving coil board to install into my A&R A60 amp and see that while that will work well enough with most MC cartridges A&R also made what they call a Cartridge Loading Module ULM/C (for moving coils) and an ULM/M for moving magnets. I can't find anything useful on the web regarding these modules and wonder if anyone has ever come across one, or know anything about them. I would also be interested to know if they can be made - are they a couple of resisters in a module - something that could easily be fabricated? Thanks.

Hello paulsaints - you'll see from the Handbook that the MC Input Impedance is specified at 330 ohms. The MC loading module specifies several input impedances lower that 300 ohms - so you can assume that the addit module will likely (i) be adding resistors in parallel to 330 ohms (ii) there will be some form of manual switch on the module, eg DIP type switch/es. This board could be made up, providing the matching socket could be sourced for plugging it in. Similarly for the MM loading module. Changing loadings could be achieved also by simply soldering in Rs in parallel to the existing input Rs - but i am assuming that you'd prefer to avoid that? PS. Did you get those beaut Cambridge R50 behemoths restored & running?

Ha - I use the R50 regularly, but with B&W DM4' s sat on top running at the same time from a Sansui 5000x. So as the top 2 speakers (of the 4) on the R50 don't work, the DM4 does the top end and I get extended base. Sounds very good! So still a pending project when normal life goes quieter (if).

Re the loading module - I can't even see where that might fit. The MC board replaces a "place holder" and sits vertical to the main PCB. No idea where a loading module might even go. I am hoping someone has one.

Hi Michael - I do - there are several versions - as far as I have found they mention the ulm/c as available but not how to use it or what it looks like or what it is made of. -Paul

Actually where it fits is pretty obvious - see the three pins labelled cartridge loading module. Any one have one?

I spent quite a few years, occasional listening sessions at my neighbour's house, his A&R A60 driving his Spendor SP2s with a Ortofon MC20 cartridge source. (TT was an LP12 & later an Oracle Alexandria/Zeta.)

avalon radio corp sold a boatload of these back in the import restricted 1980s. i still remember a classic dean harnish demo where he showed a linn/ar60 combo could sound better than a rega/naim. i lusted after an a60 but with the advent of cheap finance it was straight into a naim.

Installed the MC60 Moving coil phono stage into the A&R Cambridge A60 integrated amp - pics below Running an Audio Technica AT30E MC cartridge on a Technics SL-1100 TT through B&W DM4 speakers. Really nice sounding vintage set up in my home study - I'll leave it set up this way for a while, I think. I would still love to hunt down a cartridge loading module - pics show the insertion point. (I also have an ARCAM Alpha Plus cd attached from same generation - Philips TDA-1541a chip - to round out an excellent setup).
