rocl , are you lurking? yes, ALWAYS lurking here owen. i read it pretty quickly but it really reads like an advertisement. speed is not really a factor in computer audio. "noise" is. that's why it got better when he ditched the spinning discs as file storage. and also why low power atom processors are favoured by many. those who go with BIG processors do a whole lot of other stuff to compensate(gross oversimplification) the m2 port is great for the OS and it's what i use it for on my little fanless, chinese, server. ssd is the ONLY good storage disk. i have an evo 640. the 660 will be quicker but there is no advantage in that. it doesn't even get up to jogging speed. video and gaming need speed but there aren't very many bytes in audio comparatively speaking. average track is about 5Mb over 3mins of listening. 14kbs/sec. what he enjoyed was the lack of a spinning disk. and the use of an m2 port is an advantage in that it separates the OS from the files. now what he needs to do is separate the server and renderer functions and he will see another jump in quality. i've been listening to vinyl all week and am planning to turn on the digital tonight. i am looking forward to doing a bit of a comparison.

apologies but my quick bit of arithmetic was based on an incorrect premise. it should have been 25Mb for a 3min flac file. i was remembering the old mp3 days. so that means a transfer speed needed of 70Kb/sec. ethernet transfer rates for me are around 10 - 15Mb/sec and internal speed is around 100Mb/s from memory. that leaves an awful lot of "headroom".

Bugger! Something else to lush after. hi brendan - there has never been a lack of things to lust after. i wouldn't waste my lust on a harddrive. i spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening with my digital source after a week of vinyl only. it is a slightly different listening experience but equally enjoyable. with the vinyl it's like the i let the sound wash over me, whereas with the digital i feel like i am placing myself within the music.
