A friend of mine has asked me to check over and value some 4 channel gear that has been in storage for some time having been owned by an elderly relative. The first is an Akai GX 2800 SS reel to reel monster that appears to be in original condition. The second is a JVC 4VN 880 amplifier, also in original unmarked condition. Both have been stored in their original packaging and boxes with no sign of corrosion or even dust. Other than plugging them to confirm that they turn on I have not tested them and have not really any idea as to their value. Any advice , info, or offers will be gratefully accepted !
Cheers Graham

There are a few on hifi shark as per the link below, your looking at between 350 to 1100 nzd depending obviously on condition and market www.hifishark.com/model/akai-gx-280-d-ssHope this helps

Akai GX 280D-SS:They don't make them like they used to (early-mid 70s).... 4 track, 4 channel, 4 head, 3 motors, 4 VU meters, auto-reverse.... Where's beeman when you need him?

what a beast !
Q - why did it have auto-reverse ?
iirc quad tape was uni-directional, one sided, four tracks all going in the same direction.

Thanks for the picture Owen, it saves me from unpacking the monster. The JVC 4 channel amp is probably only worth $200 - $300, but the Akai could be quite collectable and worth quite a bit. I've plugged it in and the VU meters light up and the when the various control buttons are pressed the wheels & rollers rotate backwards and forwards, but I'm sure after all this time it would be due for a service. Not my cup of tea, I get into enough trouble with vinyl, but reel to reel could be a whole new frustrating obsession. Make a silly offer I cant refuse and you could own it !!!!

Hi guys - sorry for the late reply I have moved to the Capitol recently. It appears to be a domestic unit & playback speed means it won't play 15ips studio master tapes. I have no experience with 4 track like this but if as Owen says it plays back in stereo it could be ok. I will be back in Auckland this weekend Graham if you want to borrow some tape to test it with?. I would not muck around renovating it. Test & see if it works & if it does sell it as working. Also don't get too excited about the value. If it is mint as you say I would not pay more that $300 for it. You may get more on TM. Though these domestic units sometimes sound good the lack of build quality means if they have had any real use it may be worn. Studio machines have much better build quality & sound but you risk them having had a thrashing in some commercial studio.
Not sure if that helps - cheers.
