heya folks, i've got a very early intel imac and a nuforce dia along with a set of mordaunt short ms10's. i have a room that could use some sound.
the question is, since the computer will only happily run osx 10.4.11 or tiger in other words, does anyone know what the best spftware tonise might be?
since this project started last week i have had a chance to download "cog" and "vox" without much joy. one now refuses to open. the other is just to problematic to bother with.
anyone else mucking around with a similar setup?

Alternatively you could install a modern linux distro and optimise it for audio, quite a bit of work although the info is all available online.

owen, thanks for the link. i wanted to keep it contained in the imac and not involve a phone.
mike, i'm just not smart enough to get into linux. might get my 12 year old to look into linux.

I've installed Leopard (10.5x) even on an old pre-intel eMac;- the earliest (white?) iMacs came with Tiger 10.4x installed, but will run up to Snow Leopard (albeit not all will do 64bit SL). See: www.everymac.com/mac-answers/snow-leopard-mac-os-x-faq/mac-os-x-snow-leopard-64-bit-macs-64-bit-efi-boot-in-64-bit-mode.htmlYou can look up your specific model iMac there and see what max OSX version it will run. www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.htmlApple NZ was selling a new Snow Leopard install DVD for $25 quite recently... hmm... you can get it from here: www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopardIf you do that, make sure you then install updates - a good starting point would be to search on "Snow Leopard" at support.apple.com/en-nz - you can download some directly. Of course you'll want to back up your personal data before installing a new OSX version... Cog requires 10.6 Snow Leopard minimum - cogx.org/development.phpBut a little digging shows that Vox requires Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks.minimum Annoying that it's not on their main pages - I had to search the forum - support.coppertino.com/discussions/vox-for-mac/4376-system-requirementsI was happy enough at the time (it's out of service at the moment) using iTunes on Leopard 10.5.8 on the eMac (I stayed with iTunes 10.6 as the last one with the Coverflow view) but it meant that I had to convert all my flac files to alac (I kept the originals too, for foobar 2000 on Windows) for it. I used XLD, a great tool: sourceforge.net/projects/xld/Hope that helps (a bit!) (Hmm, Preview does nothing...Windows XP)

hi all, i'd like to recycle this thread of anyone bothers to read it! i have a 2011 iMac running el capitan now. the old iMac never really functioned as it should have and we scrapped the idea. but would like to get this one going. it has the optical out. can anyone suggest what software is still going out there?
