Only DD currently at mine is a Kenwood KD600 with Sumiko MMT tonearm and Hana EH cartridge. Had a bunch of Technics DD's back in the day, SL1300, IIRC and a couple of others. Was sorely tempted by the SL15 (haven't seen one in ages), but ended up going for a Gyro instead (and still wish that i'd chosen the Oracle on occasion...) It was quite popular at the time to partner the SP10 with the SME series 3.
Have always found most DD to sound OK and to be remarkably fuss free. An excellent choice for a newbie IMO.

My current TT is a Yamaha YP-D9, a DD circa 1978. The YP range was Yamaha's second tier of TTs at the time, the top slot occupied by a monster linear drive. The top of the YP range was the D10, weighing a hefty 17kg. The D9 was a Japan only fully manual model, based on the automatic D8, but it seems some D9s found their way outside Japan. Mine originally had a power supply for 100V and has been converted to run on 240V. The D9 is also fairly hefty at 15kg, using mass to counter vibrations. It was built using several layers of MDF with slots for motor etc routered out, and finished in an expensive Macassar Ebony veneer. The TT and arm were built for Yamaha by Micro Seiki. It is fitted with a Denon DL-103R, and the whole set up is an excellent all rounder, unlike the LP12 I used to own which produced a fantastic mid-range. Barring winning Lotto this will be my forever TT.

Nice one sub, that even looks like the Micro Seiki models I remember. Would have to admit that as much as I like the sound of my Gyro if I had to choose one deck to end my days with it would be a DD.

Hmmm, subs post made me wonder. How many of us went to a DD after having an LP12 ?
I'm one, had a Pioneer Pl300 (IIRC), then went to an LP12/SME 3, got sick of the fiddling and neurosis about whether it was level and set up properly etc, went back to Technics, (cant remember all the model numbers but 1300, 1500, 1700 rings a bell), really liked the SL15 but bought the gyro instead. Never had an SL1200, though I did buy one for my sons 21st....

And then to the SP10 or do you still have the Linn as well ?
Never had a Rega TT, completely missed that stage of my turntable development ! The acoustic feedback being the killer for me back in those days of big bassy speakers and Perraux 2150b amplifiers.

My Linn affliction ended when they started bringing out upgrade after upgrade, each an improvement on the earlier one and progressively more expensive. Only to find out recently that the first iteration is the one to look out for... Went from an LP12 to a Technics then to a Gyro. Still have it after 36 years, though its a bit like a woodsman axe: New platter, motor, suspension (a couple of times over actually), arms etc. As I've said before: Without an engineer mate with a fully equipped workshop i'd have never kept it on the road.

Having never owned a DD turntable, I thought I would give a JBE Series 3, with Hadcock 228, Grado Signature 8 a go. Never owned a Rega or Linn (oh, apart from briefly their entry level Linn Basik TT) either but not going to go there. "JBE found it hard to get traction in the UK market – not least because the major hi-fi magazines seemed to worship the LP12. Some even went so far as to recommend it in cheap systems, completely out of context, such was their evangelical zeal. So the company decided to take part in a three-way blind listening test. Published in Practical Hi-Fi in September 1979, it saw the company’s latest Series 3 going up against a Linn LP12 and an STD 305M. All three decks had SME Series III tonearms fitted and were set up by the manufacturers. The JBE was the cheapest, and many listeners said it won."

Jeez citroen, that really is an obscure one, don't recall ever having even read about one of those. although I seem to remember on on TM a while back ?
The L-09D seems to be not totally uncommon though, I remember seeing one in Soundline a few years back and I know there's a chap here in Nelson that has one.

Another KD600 here, w/ sme111 shure v15/111 - a classic no fuss combination, between times run the Garrard 401. Physics tells me that idler or direct drive are the way to go, never had any love for belts, tho' there are many I would jump at e.g. Thorens TD150/160.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

Last Kenwood L07D I saw on TardMe sold for $5700, before that one went for $3900 about three years ago. TOA had one, which might have been one of those two. I recall some Audioenz member had two of them! Anyone got one for sale?

The L-09D seems to be not totally uncommon though, I remember seeing one in Soundline a few years back and I know there's a chap here in Nelson that has one. The guy I bought it from had one of the best systems I've ever heard, ever! He had vintage Tannoys, a couple of turntables he demonstrated which I'd never heard of before and can't recall what make. But I do remember how realistic sounding his system was. It was absolutely fantastic and a sound I would love to be able to reproduce. I'm pretty sure both turntables were belt drives.

Seriously though, it has an arm and cart that I'm not familiar with, so difficult to compare.
What I did find is an immediacy and lightness/ease? I quite like.

I'll NEVER forget how that system sounded. So worth every penny.
Must try to get an invite to have another listen. He was an Audioenz member but not sure if he's signed up here.
