My stereo set up is in a shared living room, and up to about a year ago the two speakers sat each side of a 46” tv centred on an outer wall. So we always watched movies with the sound via two channel stereo. Made some major changes when I built a deck and knocked out the wall behind the tv to install French doors to the deck, as per photo.
I am unable to change the rest of the room around, so Spkrs and seating arrangement remained as they were. Where to put the tv? Bought a swivelling, extending tv support and mounted the tv on the L side wall. When not in use, the tv is pushed back against the wall, which is great as it no longer dominates the room. When we watch tv, it is extended out and swivelled so we can watch from the couch.
i have been known to watch live footy games with the tv unextended, after moving a chair so can watch on the side wall, and listening to sound via headphones so I do not disturb others.
What to do about stereo sound when watching movies? With Tv extended the L speaker is almost 1.2m directly behind the tv whereas the R spkr is about 2.4m away. I thought that would create an unbalanced sound, so initially dispensed with stereo, used the balance knob on the amp to have sound only from the L spkr.
However, forgot to change the balance one night and discovered that the ears/eyes compensate for the unbalanced stereo sound and in fact the sound quality appears to be no less than when the tv was evenly spaced between the speakers! I guess there is a psychological reason for that.
