a mate of mine who has been off-grid near kaikoura for 15yrs has spent the last 10 waiting for these batteries to become available as a cheap source of storage. he was particularly focussed on the Prius ones due to the volume of production. the theory was that after 8(?)yrs the market would flood with them. it hasn't happened. they are lasting much longer than expected.

I see that Mercury & other electricity co's are offering battery storage packs now for their solar panel customers. costly however. And buying back surplus electricity. You really need the battery storage to make solar generation helpful for easing normal peak-demand times. www.mercury.co.nz/Products/Solar/solax-box.aspx(Mercury currently offer 20% off-peak electricity for plug-in EV charging.)

I was lucky enough to drive a Tesla P100D, those things are quick! I intend to go electric long term, paying for fuel sucks.

Fewer moving parts - an EV has around 20 moving parts vs an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle which has over 1500.

Does anyone here have a Renault Zoe? Wondering how it compares to the Leaf?
|
Post by Owen Y on Nov 30, 2017 13:24:12 GMT 12
tonyd - I have a Leaf G (as you probably know).... You may be familiar with the NZ EV Owners FB group - you'll likely get ready answers from folk there, *some* of whom are very knowledgeable. The big thing is that the Zoe has signif longer range battery than the Leaf, but uses the the Euro Mennekes AC charge connector - this may be relevant if you plan regional trips away. AFAIK this type of connector is not common yet (esp outside of cities), compared with the J1772 AC & CHAdeMo DC connectors used by the Leaf, Mitsub, Kia, etc. The Leaf is a bigger car (surprising big) & v well designed, electronically & mechanically, IMO. It depends also on which year/model of Leaf, Jap or UK import, etc - specs & features differ.

The Leaf needs a bit of tweaking of tyre pressures to make it handle well. It's motor is v torque-y, moreso than the Zoe. I believe that Renault & Nissan are now collaborating on a common Zoe-Leaf platform.

Nice. More power (good), torque (already plenty), better battery (greatly increased range), better handling. Boring black interior. The E-pedal is interesting - currently the Leaf has subtle engine braking (regen-braking) when you lift off the accelerator. Compared with an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle which now seems to have noticeable 'run-on', with much more use of brakes all the time. Thus on the Leaf, brake pads reportedly last many times longer. Currently also there is also a 'B-mode', selectable via gear knob, which applies stronger regen-braking - for say long downhills.

Love electric.... Worked on and driven a load of BMW i3's Driven a Leaf Driven a Tesla Model S P100D........ I want one Driven a range of Plug-In Hybrids, the BMW 330e being my favorite. Electric range isn't all that great but I drove the car form Auckland to Wellington and back to collect my Line Magnetic 219, I enjoyed every second of the drive. That is a superb motor vehicle.

the ev roadshow hit town today. drove a hyundai ioniq, bmw i3, new nissan leaf. no lust ! the i3 was like a warm hatch but the rest zzzzzzzzzzzzz then had a ride in a tesla s 90d. fast but one dimensional, all it did was make the rs6 from a few weeks a back seem even more amazing ! at this stage none of them would tempt me out of my golf gti. long live petrol !

Nice pics anyway On the open road, the Leaf, with its low C of G, torque & aerodynamics, is a different experience. Quiet of course. A different way of travelling, a change of mindset required. Low stress

also zero drama. i want drama in my motoring. these cars are being sold like appliances by appliance salesmen ! the bmw guy didn't know of m-division and the nissan guy had no idea who nismo were. best feature of the day - inductive cellphone charging in the hyundai.

the guy who repaired the battery on my ebike has a bmw 3 series he took the sick engine out of and "electrified" himself. the batteries recently failed and he has just bought a Leaf. he was very proud of it and thought it met all his needs.
michael - you want drama, buy an ebike and use it to get around!

A friend of a friend has a Model 3, not sure which variant, very fast, very one dimensional. And now a message from our Aussie friend John Cadogan, Fans of Electric Jesus turn away now
