Yes in the late 90s, the 3A was US$2395 with MC phono. Inflation since then??

that's fancy, i don't remember them having the blingy lighting. go back a generation to the 2a/b preamps of 1986, they were only $675usd, complete with built-in phono stage and a spare tube !

I don't recall the blue lights either, in fact all of the ones I remember were black. Plentiful enough 2nd in Singapore last time I was there.

Hi Owen I've got the one with the blue lights - the L3A. I bought it not too long ago from Jason Parmenter to use with the Leben CS660P amp. It sounds fantastic and lifted the 660P into a whole different league than with just its passive input. Quite strong on rhythm too, and the high gain available was just what I'd been looking for with my low output Lyra mc. I absolutely love it, although the captive umbilical cable connecting the power supply to preamp makes it more difficult to move if you need to change position on the rack. Since putting it in the system I've had no desire to change, upgrade or anything. I just like listening to music now. Here is a review: www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/audible-illusions-l3a-line-preamplifier/Cheers, Greg

Hi Greg,
Just wondering what made you choose the L3a over the matching Leben pre amp ?

Two things mainly - price (Jason offered it to me at a very good price and I could never afford to buy something like a Leben CX28 pre at new rrp), and also I don't think any of the Leben preamps would give enough gain to use with my particular vinyl front end. It was a lucky gamble that really paid off thankfully.

Greetings davidsylvian - the L3A's 30dB gain is indeed unfashionably high, these days, linestages often are much less than 20dB, some only 10dB - ie only 1/4 to 1/10 gain. I must play Brilliant Trees again

Fantastic album! It's a tough call between that and 'Secrets of the Beehive' as to which gets the most lathed by repeated listening around at my place.

Haven't played anything by Japan or David Sylvain this century. Might give Briiliant Trees a spin at the weekend, wonder where I filed it ?

Hi foveaux
You have excellent taste! His music has brought me a lot of pleasure over the years :-) My first experience of Sylvian was hearing Japan's 'Ghosts' on Radio With Pictures as a teen and thinking it was one of the most amazing things I had ever heard. His projects have been consistently rewarding for me ever since.
