i avoid sarcasm like the plague - now irony is a much finer thing, and i have been known indulge myself on the odd occasion. Ah, top shelf all round I see.. As for the R32, I have no direct experience tbh but there certainly are guys that rate them on the Euro Dub scene... For whatever that's worth?

the mk5 gti is a much better all round car. the R32 would have been great if i was in my 20's, but alas those days are long gone.

pix of your gti rocl ?
the r32 mk4 + 5 was an attempt to head off jap rally hotrods like the wrx sti and mitsi evo. they failed to do that - too heavy, to dull handling, too slow. but they had poise and class and that amazing sounding v6, they were good mini-luxury cruisers with character. cheap as chips now (the mk4 was %75k nz new, mk5 about $70k)but the ricers soon found them expensive to tune.
while the mk4 r32 was a better car than the mk4 gti, the mk5/6 gti's was a finer driver's car than the r32/r.
it wasn't until the mk7 that a golf r was deemed better overall than the cheaper gti.
but even that didn't last long as the latest gti 40th anniversary blitzes the mk7 r in everything except a straight drag race.

it would have to be an sti .... even then a later my11/12 sti over my local test route a 2008 r32 was as quick as a 2008 sti. big surprise was a 2008 renault megane r26 with a mere 169kw, fwd with mechanical lsd, was quicker and more exciting to drive than any awd hot hatch of the time.

I just got offered the new General Managers Mk4 GTi for a very inviting price. She's a minter and I've seen all the work that's been done... My head was whirring away... And then he restructured me!? Seriously. Madness.

Alas, the r32 will have to go to another, better positioned punter. And truthfully, wouldn't be fit for purpose. Ever seen a sawmill log yard? I park off to the side of one of those each day. Cheap, fun but nothing to get too precious about is my shopping brief.

Not at all. Perhaps I could have been clearer - by work I meant proper maintenance, a complete re-bushing etc. Maintained rather than just serviced... And your love of the Subaru suggests that you are either a) the worlds luckiest man or b) you have never owned a Suby!? Cos if-in neither of those apply - you'd know all about getting work done...

OK, have it your way. Yes I have owned Subarus. I have worked on them, and also most European brands , and I was Subaru NZ National Service Manager for 12 years. But what would I know.

Now, now Graham, let's not get defensive. They're an absolute joy to drive when they're going right - I honestly didn't realise there was any question that they're not built to go the distance?

Mate.... I took one look at yours and thought it would be trouble. Was surprised to find out that you made it back to Blenheim to be honest.
Have had my years of unreliable motor cars, during my student years we ran Morris Minors which had the attraction of being very simple to work on and a plentiful supply of cheap spare parts. I often bought complete cars not going in those days in order to get parts. I could do an engine swap in a morning. Thank god those days are over.

Might have to rename this The Bag Johnny Thread... I admit I was had with this one but legal recourse is more hassle than worth. A registered Euro Dealer that I see is no longer on TM and has long since stopped taking my calls... Doesn't put me off either the model nor brand - just shows once again that assuming trust is a relic of a bygone era... All this said, I bought it as a project and had the problem not been electrical, I wouldn't be in the least phased given what I paid.
