Using the Hana ML yesterday and lowering onto the lp got some horrible distortion. Removed the cartridge to check and under a jewelers lope the stylus tip appeared to have lost it's shape. First thought was it'd lost the tip but some very careful cleaning seems to have restored most of that. However the tip shape still doesn't look correct , black in colour and with what appears to be a very fine hair attached. Beside the usual stylus brushes, Zero Dust and magic eraser does anyone have suggestions for removing stubborn material.

Thoughts and prayers at this stage. I have a grubby Decca Gold so await any advice that you get with interest. I don't know how contact cleaner would work with bits of plastic and silk thread.

If what you've tried hasn't worked then more drastic steps may be necessary.
Linn's fine green sandpaper? 2000 grit?
Or some fluid. Lyra SPT is non-alcoholic but very expensive.
One of those ultra sonic cleaners? Humming guru have one.
Best of luck!

May have solved it . Used some Project record cleaner(non alcoholic) on a cotton bud and very, very gently touched the stylus. Followed that with a brush with a carbon stylus brush then some magic eraser . After one go things had improved greatly so went through the cycle a few more times. I now have a nice looking stylus shape as far as I can tell which looks 100% cleaner. The tip still has some black in places but as the shape looks good will leave well enough alone.
Decided to get out my Hana SL which has been in storage for some years and the stylus on that appeared indistinct and jagged. One round through the cycle above and it was looking close to new. Again there is a small amount of black near the tip but the shape looks good.
I did both these cartridges out of the arm as it allowed for a more delicate touch .

Be careful with cotton buds ! Even a cruddy stylus will be sharp enough to shred them. I use the close napped brush that came with my Stylast Stylus Cleaner. My regular cleaner is Lyra SPT - once at the start of a session. A quick dry brush before and after each side. Once every 2-3 months out comes the Goldring ultrasonic, a few drops of SPT and a 20 sec buzz, then a demag with a Sumiko Fluxbuster. No drop onto tacky type cleaners, especially after the Fremer episode. Amongst my bits 'n pieces I have a sample of a Manawatu TV and Sound branded Linn style cleaner
