Recently I wanted to make up a 2.5m cable to go from the turntable switch box to reach the little Denon 90's midi system I'm using interim while the main system is down.
Used some silver plated SVHS cable chopped up, it measured ~ 150pF over 2.5m. Just a temporary arrangement.
But I thought since using it again I'd share a tweak to avoid softening plastic and warping the inner contact angle when soldering cheap RCA plugs.
Maybe more expensive ones might be more sturdy, but I drew tired of having them warp off center when soldering from the rear. Even gripped with ...
So I found that I had some wood dowels, 8mm OD approx, and drilled, nicely centered with a hobby drill press, a ~3mm hole in its end.
I say 3mm, I may have loosened it in the way out, the digital calipers say 0.125" or ~3.18mm, but it worked.
So I could insulate the plug inner from bending and heat while soldering, with my old helping hands device...
Cheers ;=})
