As this is an audio, ie sound, forum I thought it would be good to 'hear' from you the best engine sound you have ever heard. For me it was the scream of a Matra V12 at Le Mans many years ago. I think it was around 1970. During my tradition OE tour of UK and Europe in a VW camper we spent time at Le Mans, in fact we camped there. We were woken from our drunken slumber by the sound of the Matra team doing morning testing. Standing on the Dunlop bridge we spotted several dedicated fans with portable cassette recorders with the mikes hanging down on long cords recording the fabulous sound as the cars raced by underneath. I swear we could hear the screaming engines for the full length of the Mulsanne Straight. The noise would just start to fade at the far end, then cut, followed by frantic blipping of the throttle as they downshifted in the traditional heel and toe shuffle to negotiate the sharp turn at the far end. Beautiful music to a died in the wool 'petrol head'. It is a sound I will never forget.

i've heard a few race cars over the years, nothing as memorable as a le mans experience. a standout was as a youngster we would watch the races at the long gone levin race circuit. it was a tasman cup race and chris amon's screaming little ferrari dino showed the big v8 engined cars a clean set of tailpipes. later that season he would win the 69 tasman series in the little red car. another race car motor locked in the memory banks is the early audi quattro rallycars that came here in the 80s for the international rallies. the 5 cylinder turbo motor sounded like nothing else, offbeat, full of bangs and pops. in roadcars some of the best motors i've heard were ... - alfa's original twincam four cylinder and the 2.5 v6 - bmw 3.2 straight six in the e46 m3 csl - vw 3.2 vr6 in the golf mk4 r32 - mercedes-amg 6.2 v8 - mazda rx7 rotary spinning effortlessly to the redline - equally amazing, a toyota 4a-ge on it's way to hitting its 8000rpm cutout back in 2002 i bought a cd that was full of recordings of local supercars, see photos

The one that sticks in my memory was the sound of the Alfa Romeo GTA bought out from the UK to race in the Lady Wigram classic in the early 90's.
From memory they were a fully race tuned 1300cc, and really screamed. "Tearing silk" was an apt description.

it's a decca tribute to the winners of the 1966 le mans. ford exercising it's $$$ to lick ferrari's butt. ford tried to stage a 3 car simultaneous finish but the rules stated the car that travelled the greatest distance was the winner. at the wheel were aome kiwi blokes by the name of bruce mclaren and chris amon. i missed the opportunity to get chris' autograph a few years ago when he opened the chris amon exhibition at the bulls museum.

Love the sound of the big pre war Mercedes GP cars, especially the W25 which had a very distinctive howl with a supercharger blowing through the carb.
The later W125 also ranks right up there in my pantheon along with the Honda 5 clynder 125cc and 6 cylinder 250cc GP bikes.
Some years ago at a retro meeting at Teretonga there was a late 1930s Alfa 12c GP car that had me glued to the fence every time it went out.
Went to my one and only F1 meeting at Adelaide in 1993 and couldn't believe the noise from the GP cars, physical, that went right through your body. Ear plugs a must.

Quite a few stick in my mind...my Alfetta Gtv6 on the chassis dyno at Beninca Motors; the inimitable Alfasud 1500 approaching 6000rpm; the Alfa 2L twin cam at full noise on the dyno...blood curdling scream! Also a supercharged Nissan straight 6 Skyline. The Ferrari V12 F1 cars at Adelaide. But for me nothing was as awesome as being in a hotel on the straight at the Adelaide F1 GP in about 1995 listening to Prost and Senna's McLaren turbocharged V6s about 15m from the hotel window and screaming past at 300kmh! Nuts... Oh and the Rolls Royce Merlin V16-equipped hydrofoil race boats. What a wonderful noise!
