I'm only asking because I've run out of room and having to move my LPs around.
I used to have all my lps organised by artist in alphabetical order, including classical and jazz.
I'm leaning towards separating the classical and jazz but my only concern is how to classify some of the albums that cross over between the genres. Easy to separate the likes of the Blue Note albums, but what about cross over artists such as Portico Quartet, Cinematic Orchestra etc?
First world problem!

Where I have a reasonable artist collection they get their own part or whole cubby. So the likes of Dylan, Hendrix, J Tull, Rory Gallagher, Richard Thompson plus several more have their own grouping. Then there is an alphabetical section covering six cubbies for artists where i may have a couple of lps at best or in one or two cases, artists that have fallen from favour. Just to really make things clear there are also a few groupings by genre, ie Blues/Jazz, country, UK Folk and Alternative artists. Hey, it all makes sense to me.

I've also separated my pre-1990 lps from my new purchases, along with any collections that have been donated to me eg by my siblings, each having their own section.

For my humble collection a simple demarcation into broad genres - pop/rock, soundtracks, jazz, classical, audiophile - alphabetically, suffices. Every couple of months there might be a culling from the racks to my low profile storage system, which is simply alphabetically arranged.

Jazz...Yes well they should have a seperate box all for themselves...On said box there should be a word in LARGE letters..preferably in a very bright colour, possibly highlighted with glitter and those gold stars we used to get for being good at school..[personally I never got many] Anyway back to the word.. Incinerator!

Perhaps the answer is in your question? Just organise a shelf of "crossover" as you like, perhaps alphabetical after inclusion. I only have some Portico and I think all CO digitally...
But I do have, say Clannad, Cocteau Twins, Enya LPs all shelved next to each other. All bought new and hardly played in the decades since the original thrill at the time ...
Then there's also been quite a few Oregon LPs collected. Beautiful artwork on the covers. Make it up as you go along, has been my motto re shelving so far ...
Research and check out others ideas, of course. How to tag digital collections too, especially classical.
I already have jazz and classical and whatever you might term other shelved separately, thematically, alphabetically after that.
But it reminds me of - to who or where do they all go to, just before or after I die? ;=})
Harking back to another thread. I doubt my siblings will be interested, even in the hi-fi gear.
But it's probably worth cataloguing them, I realise, beyond just spine photos; perhaps to Discogs as others seem to have done.
I haven't gotten around to that yet. Or even yet up to digitizing the best, despite almost ready with a 24/96 converter.
Of course they will need a clean first. So one project slots into another. Build the ultrasonic cleaner. And so it goes.
Regards!

Run out of room ? Give away your surplus/un-listened items.

As a hoarder...I mean collector, I do find it hard to part with some albums. But I have been giving away a few of my lps to friends and colleagues who are starting or resurrecting their collections to inspire them to play more lps. Seasoned collectors like yourself can go find their own freebies 😉

I listed 10 Doors and 7 Hendrix lps on a local Facebook group yesterday. Had an enthusiastic young man around earlier who purchased the lot at a generous, bargain price. I am only too Happy to see them go to someone who will enjoy them. Much better than languishing on an old man's shelves for 20 years and never played. Good mixture of Australasian originals and as new reissues. Heavier of pocket and lighter of heart.😁
Since my sell off started last year I am touching a thousand items gone, mostly CDs but around 100 lps. Can't say there's any regrets.

I haven't sold many records but a few of them I probably shouldn't have sold at the time, only because they are now worth about 10x what I sold them for A few I've even bought again to replace them!

Nearly finished sorting my lps, but slightly surprised to find a few more than I thought in the "new/to play" section. I've resolved to not buy any more lps until I've given this lot a good listen. Yeah right!

Yes I have off loaed a bunch over the last couple of months as well. Its a painful project listing the singly on Tm but well worth it financially. Also quite interesting going through and deciding what to keep. This usually means playing a few things I havent played for years. Its a great project...
