Solving an audio problem with bits left over …
My problem was to add a Roon streaming endpoint and a DAC to a home office sound system. I have used three Raspberry Pi’s set up as Roon endpoints for other systems, and could have gone down that track, but needed a DAC as well. I saw an Auralac Mini on TradeMe, which I regret not buying as that was booth a Roon endpoint and Dac - I just wasn’t clear about what it was, or what I needed at that time, but it would have been a perfect solution.
Fast forward to a brain-wave. I have an unused Meridian Explorer 2 and an unused Mac Mini 3 (I was my main device until I was able to get an iPad Air through work, it sat unused until my wife asked for it, but after a while she went back to her Kindle - since then it has sat in a drawer).
So the iPad is a fine Roon remote and Roon endpoint, add the Meridian Explorer 2, and I should be fine to go.
But … the iPad doesn’t have enough power for the Meridian Dac. I need an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to provide pass through for the lightning connector and extra USB power to the device. Once that’s done I’ll let you know how it all goes.
But if the power issue is resolved I will have installed a Roon Remote and Endpoint with full graphic screen and a MQA capable DAC for just the cost of the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. They are $75 - OK if it works but expensive to just try out if it doesn’t work. Anyone got one I can borrow to test??
