Those who have been reading my posts know I recently bought a P75/3 from Cooksferry to replace my Linn Pretek.
As I had a new cartridge installed, I firstly played a number of favourite LPs through the Pretek to get a reference point. Must say I would have happily lived with the Pretek if that was my only choice. The Denon DL103R lived up to its reputation and presented a very fine musical experience.
Then set up the P75/3. First turning on there was a HUM! That went when turned volume on my Plinius 2100i from 11.30 to 9 o'clock, but that must have been a settling in thing, as the hum is no longer there, even at high levels, phew! Another negative, when I turned things off at end of listening session, turned off the P75/3 first which caused a massive "whump" from the speakers- lesson learnt, turn off the amp first or turn volume right down.
Now to listen. I left the P75/3 jumpers at the settings Cooks had been using. Listened to same LPs and tracks. Everything a bit more refined and pure. An example, on Rodriguez song "waiting for sugar man", towards the end a lot of high pitched, mostly subtle, sounds are heard. With the Pretek those sounds were a little smeared but the P75/3 smoothed them all out and each sound was distinct.
But overall I was a little disappointed, dynamics seemed to be lacking. With the Pretek Freddy Mercury's voice was clear and to the front of the mix, with the P75/3 his voice was back in the mix - strange! Also, even with volume control very near 12, things didn't seem that loud.
Next morning (today), took the lid off and changed jumpers around, set cart loading at 100ohm, gain to high (63dB), and on the enhancer mode set to medium resistance (the DL103R is quoted at 14ohm impedance). That left 4 little jumpers unused!
Wow, big difference, dynamics vastly improved, will play loud if I want, everything is "there". Almost, but not quite, up to (as my memory serves me) of the sound when using Plinius Jarrah with LP12, Ittok LV(something) arm and ATOC9 MC cart (that cart is now listed at over $NZ700 on the needle doctors website - paid just over $400 back in 2005!)
Right now playing CSN&Y "So Far", last night it sounded "tame" without dynamics, now nice and grungy, good PRAT, tapping feet, doing couch groove!
Thanks cooks, and to all who helped me make up my mind to buy the P75/3.
