Ditto "What is this thing for? Allo DigiOne is an add-on for the Raspberry Pi, and these add-ons are called HATs. Simply put, HAT is a board that you can stack on top of your R-Pi, and this board will bring some new features that your general-purpose Raspberry Pi doesn’t possess out of the box. In the case of Allo DigiOne, we’re talking about adding a SPDIF interface so you can connect your DAC using one of the two provided connectors – RCA or BNC out. Both send the exact same SPDIF digital signal, they’re just physically different. RCA is much more common these days, but some DACs like Chord ones use BNC connectors. So whatever standard the DAC manufacturer opted for, you’re going to be covered with DigiOne." RRP US$99

Ok - so what is it? - answer - a really competent Roon endpoint based on a Raspberry Pi 4B. The Raspberry Pi 4B is an excellent USB Roon endpoint, and these "mini computers" can also have "hats" i.e. add-on boards that clip onto the multi-port, and in this case the Allo Digione is a "hat" that adds RCA SPDIF to that Raspberry Pi Roon endpoint. Up until now where I didn't have a hard-wired Ethernet close by, I was using the Apple Airport Express system for getting an unwired Roon source into a sound system, but that was capped at 16/48. The Raspberry Pi does 24/192, even over wifi. That works really well for my USB Dacs, but I have a number of legacy Dacs that don't have USB. I could use e.g. a Peachtree X1 USB - SPDIF converter (and have successfully done so) but the Allo Digione creates a one-box wifi or wired Roon endpoint at much higher rates than e.g. Apple Airport. They are not expensive, and have a very good reputation. See www.allo.com/sparky-transport.html for more info. Note: a big difference between the Raspberry Pi 4B and the previous generation 3B is that the 4B has vastly improved USB "noise' separation.
