Oh noes ! A mutual friend of Owen's and mine, Roy Chan also passed away yesterday morning. Two of the most knowledgable hi-fi guys I've ever known, where Owen was always the gentleman, Roy could be prickly. I can imagine the conversations these two will be having in hi-fi heaven. Vale Owen and Roy.

Been exchanging messages with Owen over the weekend, wondering why he hadn’t answered my message sent yesterday afternoon. No hint of anything untoward in his messages to me. An absolute shock. A perfect gentleman, and his knowledge of Hifi encyclopaedic! Thoughts with his wife and family. RIP Owen.

I don't know what to say. This is a huge shock. I had also been messaging Owen. And Roy was a great pal for many years.

I didn't get the chance to meet Owen either, but he was always incredibly generous with his time and help. So patient with my bumbling around audio, and very kind in delivery with his words of advice. I imagine he was a great guy to hang around with and I'm sorry I didn't get that opportunity.

Upon my daily check in I had a sense of foreboding seeing a thread titled Owen Young. As with many others here I knew him only through this forum and the great work he has done to provide a venue for us. He will be sadly missed by us all, not to mention his whanau and those friends he has in the "real" world.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

Devastating news. Owen was such a kind and gentle soul, always happy to give his time and advice to fellow audio enthusiasts. He has been a great audio mentor and pal ever since I got back into vinyl, and taught me so much on my revived audio journey. Except for talking up that awfully difficult Terminator arm! I caught up with him about a month ago to hear his revived SP10 and subjected him to some of my fav jazz albums. As always he had something good to say about them all. My thoughts and condolences to Lily, family, di di and friends. RIP my friend!

Oh no! The daily check in this morning with a thread entitled Owen Young at the top. A sense of impending doom. An ever- present force on this forum, a lovely guy, always helping, I think one of his last posts was about a hand-deburring tool. Thoughts go to his family and pals. RIP Owen, we will miss you! edit...just as I read this, Annie Lennox was playing Moonlight Sonata on her piano at home. A tear rolled down my cheek.

Hi Everyone, My name is Jeremy Young and I am Owen's son. As you guys have heard, my father passed away yesterday. It was the result of an accident he had whilst out cycling on Sunday morning. In the end he went peacefully and surrounded by his family. He really was a great man and will be sorely missed by everyone in his life. This forum really meant a lot to him and he put a lot of energy into growing it to what it is today. He also regularly mentioned a lot of you guys in conversation to me. I think it would mean a lot to him if this forum would continue to thrive in his absence. I will do my best to pop in from time-to-time, I will also try and figure out a solution to making sure ongoing admin and moderation tasks are taken care of. Regards, Jeremy

Regards, Jeremy Thanks for the update Jeremy. My condolences to your family and best wishes for the days ahead. I do hope that the forum will continue in some shape but without Owens' enthusiasm and experience it will be a more difficult task. I first ran into Owen around 2004 on the old AE forum and I will be forever appreciative for the guidance he offered as I bumbled around over the years. It has been interesting to watch the membership grow but the forum stay with a warm, intimate vibe that I haven't found on any other forum. I don't think there would be any argument that any success is in the main attributable to your father.

What very sad news, I feel for your sudden loss, and the immense upheaval. A bicycle accident, how terrible! Tragic news.Thank you for your update, Jeremy. I hope you'll have all the support you'll need. Lots to be done and quite a shock. I hope you will be able to keep darklanternforowen.wordpress.com/ alive too. It's odd, I was thinking of contacting him via PM Sunday and even Monday since I'd been invited as a guest to attend a NZVRS meeting, which I'd understood from friends he sometimes went to. In the end I didn't, and also missed the meeting (an auction night). We had never met, I'd wondered if we might. I'm so sorry. But his spirit will live on in his pages and beyond. And in others memories.

I am just totally stunned!. My deepest condolences to you, Jeremy, and family. Like many here, I have never met Owen personally, only exchanging the odd PM, or banter on this fantastic forum of his creation. He was always poking me on cassette related stuff, particularly if the N word was ever mentioned!. Since it's inception, the DL has been the place to come and read what is going on in NZ Audio, but it is so much more than that too, thanks to Owen. Ever the gentleman, I will miss his presence here. RIP Owen
