Michael Fremer ( ANALOG PLANET) recorded a 15-minute introductory video to open the 'Making Vinyl' 2020 conference, held this year 'virtually' on Zoom on 8th & 9th December. Fremer refers to the catastrophic Feb. fire at the Apollo Masters Corporation, the only US-based manufacturer of lacquer discs. Michael shows & discusses recent vinyl records of his, by Tom Petty, Taylor Swift, Smetana 'Má vlast', Luke Scneider, Muddy Waters D2D, Will Toledo, Blue Note Tone Poet series, Verve-Analogue Productions series, Optimal Media (Germany) 'sustainable' vinyl releases, As usual, always something of interest from Fremer....

Agreed with the above comment. We got a pre loved shop here in Hastings and Im sure he thinks his stock..alot of which is pretty rubbishy should be priced at new vinyl prices.

Been buying second hand for a bit. Had a look at retail - when did the price go up $20 - $30 for a standard disc?

New records have been at silly prices for the past decade ? Now used sellers are catching up

New 1LP vinyl currently seems to be $39.95 - $49.95 here (aside from special issues, coloured/picture discs etc). The price of a good steak meal

I'd take a good steak over most new records Wine extra

An album like Nick Cave's Idiot Prayer that will last a lifetime or yet another piece of meat that will eventually turn into you know what...? 😛

Of the sellers I most often frequent ( Slowboat, Pennylane and Family Jewels). you would be lucky to find much of interest at $20.00. Most of interest seem to run out at $30.00 and upward according to rarity and collectability. New is anywhere from $50.00 upwards. Gets expensive quick huh...

Is buying new vinyl worth it if it’s originally digitally mastered? It might make sense to buy if it was an all-analogue affair.

For new records it depends how badly you want a particular album on vinyl.
Some releases go beyond sound quality with better packaging, supplementals etc.
For re-issues 9/10 the original analogue will sound better, there are a few good digitals eg, the Blade Runner soundtrack re-issue on red vinyl from a few years back but the majority are blah.
There are also a few cases where a new analogue reissue is not better than the original digital master.
Eg. I don't think disc 1 of the new Tom Petty Wildflowers reissue sounds better than the original cut from digital.

Most NEW music has been digitally mastered in the past few decades or so (at 96 kHz 24 bit), so no analogue option. And I'm not personally about to rule out 99.9% of all the new music released on vinyl in those years.

Is there all that much cut from 96/24 ?
The latest Dylan is the obvious one that springs to mind.
A lot is from CD quality digital ! The previously mentioned Tom Petty was from 44.1/16, The Beatles 2009 remastered stereo box was from 44.1/24.
The delayed Fur Patrol Pet vinyl will be most likely be from 44.1/16 too as it was never recorded in a higher resolution.

Oh, I thought that 96/24 was the default now a days, with some being 192khz wrt the major labels. Unlike the trashy DOXY, Jazz Wax, Jazz Tracks public domain labels.

I think the default is whatever is cheapest Why won't record companies readily disclose the p[provenance of their releases ? The Ry Cooder Trespass reissue on MOV will be from digital too.

I think the default is whatever is cheapest The Ry Cooder Trespass reissue on MOV will be from digital too.And it sounds bloody fantastic, so couldn't really care if its from digital or analogue, 1 bit or 24 bit

One of the exceptions !

Has the Ry Cooder been compared to the sound of a nice dac playing it? What I mean is, why would you convert a digital master to analogue with a dac and listen to it from vinyl through the phono playback system, when you can avoid a whole lot of added distortion and expense by listening to the dac directly? For me a reason to buy digitally mastered vinyl would be to have nice big artwork on the cover, and the feeling that you’re owning something physical.

Yep, that's a lot of why I buy vinyl, the physical format, artwork, ritual etc
