Hard to see where they are going with this. Reading the specs and blurb it looks like an entry level plug and play but certainly isnt priced accordingly. Incredible to think that this is the same company that brought us the iv and v tonearms and the models 10, 15, 20 and 30 turntables. I could see where they were going with the synergy but this looks to be an awful mis step imo.

Hard to tell & easy to jump to conclusions from a small photo, maybe it looks more 'SME quality' upon closer inspection?... There are plenty of not-so-cheap TTs that are made of just MDF board dressed up with paint, vinyl or veneer. At least this SME Model 6 is not so - it is "CNC machined from a unique polymer high density resin material providing a high mass, small footprint and superb resonance absorption..." Perhaps it could have done with some more stylish industrial design input

More importantly, it sonically does the business apparently... " Give this player something demanding... and it delivers an authoritative performance brimming with control and insight.. The music’s fierce dynamic shifts are handled with calm and rendered with confidence. " Compared with the highly regarded Rega Planar 10: " It doesn’t have... quite the musical fluidity of Rega’s excellent Planar 10, but the 6 offers an attractive blend of precision, stability and composure that many will like. " " This isn’t a deck that stomps its character all over the music. This SME, like others we’ve heard, prefers to put the recording in the spotlight. It’s this transparency that pushes the Model 6 into the class-leading group at this level. " See - WHAT HI-FI? (16 Sept '20)

Yes I was going to mention that ...
Reminds me of my previously owned Garrard SP25 Mk1 & Mk2 heavy cast platter decks (they went to thin lightweight pressed after that).
The mat was glued down (I still have one that is off-center) and more finely ribbed, with expanses of shiny stuff.
Mind you, didn't (some at least) Garrard 301 also have ribbed mats?
There's presumably a rational decision, reason for designing them thus. What is it? Maybe it's valid?
Here are a few examples including Garrard:

Marketing to the Japanese lucrative market? and of course for 'zen' state reproduction : The same marketing approach, seemingly, is a feature for luxury watches (german Nomos in this case):
"I see music as a lifetime affair." [Rory Gallagher]
"Free - I miss that band, but when I look back, we were very young" [Paul Rodgers]
