Along with a few others around here I've complained about the increasing price of vinyl, this was one of the reasons I've started listening to ones and zeros a lot more recently (Denafrips review on the way Owen). But the flipside is your record collection is going up in value and it may be a lot more than you think. I'm back spending time cataloging on Discogs and there have been more than a few suprise on what some reissues and recent releases are worth. Most notably Tom Petty Wildflowers and Dido Life For Rent, both of which are showing an average sale price of $600! The former is a DMM recording which I'm not a big fan of but does sound ok, the latter seems to have doubled in price in the last few years but is a really nice pressing. Quite a few others are in the $1-200 range. Even my copy of Green Day Bullet In A Bible (dont judge me) shows at $250. Would it be shallow of me if I said I swear it sounds better now I know its worth more?

Yes I too have noticed the steadily rising price of second hand LP's. Things of interest now seem to be regularly around the $50.00 mark, Jazz reissues even higher. As I have a largeish collection this doesnt really bother me too much as my spending is well down these days anyway. One thing that does bug me is the price buyers offer you when you are looking to flick a few on. A buck each seems to be the going rate....

Clicked on the RG new arrivals page yesterday $70 for the new Lucinda Williams and same price for a reissue of the Underdogs Wasting Our Time lp. Personally, current pricing makes me even more content that I'm quite happy to listen to cds and that I have more than enough music to last me another lifetime. I have been in tentative negotiations with a shop to off loading all my vinyl plus a few cd box sets(1300 items). After viewing my collection on Discogs they didn't break into laughter with my thoughts on pricing which is encouraging. At this stage I'll not make any firm commitment until the new year. If their pricing doesn't gell then the records stay and it'll be a case of have fun family when the old man's no longer here. I have zero interest in selling on Trade Me or Discogs, the thought of having to deal with some of the pin heads that lurk out there ......

Harvey - i have an EU copy of Wildflowers - not DMM, supposedly cut from digital - but sounds great. The album's been remastered for release in a multitude of versions; The 3LP set isn't too badly priced, The big box sets look nice but i've zero interest in alternate takes/demos etc. store.tompetty.com/

It’s been meticulously built with many rarities, limited editions, OOP & desirable albums: all reflecting a ‘completists’ focus. Of note, his Box Sets are unique in any private collection in NZ; and probably internationally too. In d/w Cooks, if his collection is to be ‘let go’ (and it’s a big IF) agreed it would be best to go as a ‘collection.’ Hopefully to a music enthusiast who would preserve and enjoy it, rather than to anyone else, incl. dealers/shops, who is $ driven. (noted andrewp) Of course intensive ‘counselling’ of Cooks is necessary to negate this ‘off-loading’ DL colleagues, we have until the new year! (A situation like this reminds of the quote: ‘everything I own is for sale if the price is right…even my wife…’ )

Have to admit that the system has had it's good points the last couple of times.

Possibly a topic for a different thread but I wonder how many members are thinking about a possible sell down of their collection. Is there a desire to declutter or is it a case of leaving it for someone else to deal with. Neither of my children are interested in my music or in fact have the room for it.

My succession plan involves one of my offspring opening a used hifi, record, and coffee shop... While you're around to have your say , tell them what they're doing wrong and enjoy much free coffee.

"Universal Music Group, one of the largest record labels in the world, recently announced a substantial price increase on nearly 2,500 vinyl titles. This will undoubtedly impact you as a record collector as your local stores will have no choice but to increase prices. Will other labels follow suit? Will this impact how many records you frequently buy? Is this a sign of inflation taking hold of the vinyl industry? We discuss on the latest episode of Talking About Records"
Catalogue prices of standard releases e.g Abbey Rd USD26 now 35, Black Crowes Shake your money maker USD22 to 32, Lana del Rey Born to Die, USD22 to 32, Dr Dre's 2001 USD25 to 35, Nirvana Unplugged USD30 now 45!
