Hi Guys,
I know more than a few of you out there are idler fans. I have just had this one turn up for a service, guy has had it in his closet for 30 years so all the usual ailments. I have yet to get into it but its in very original condition. Are these collectable or sought after at all ? Guy just wants a record player to play his records so if its rare and or valuable he might be better off flogging this and finding a cheap belt drive or suchlike ?
Any thoughts ?

Rare but not particularly sought after or valuable.
Hi-fi shark lists recent 2020 sales at 60-275 euros.
Fix if economical to do so ? It will probably last another 30 years.
Sidebar - on Monday I was in a hi-fi store and in walks an old chap with a very sad Ortofon X5-MC p-mount ! The cantilever was bent way off to one side. Shop guy had never seen a p-mount MC before.

Hmm I didn't know they did p-mount, but I have an Ortofon X3-MC cart with a sadly distressed bent cantilever. Stylus tip looks OK under a microscope. What to do?
Can't find it on Ortofon site even under historical cartridges.

Michael is right it's not worth a lot.
What it does have is potential and at that point your friend needs to make a call on whether he gets this mounted in a proper plinth, with tone arm and so on. Or just move on and buy a reasonable deck for that amount of money.

Nah if its not a collectable will just give it a clean up and service, maybe a new cart and off he goes as happy as a sandboy.

Yeah, like that but white. I guess all I've got (pics somewhere too) is this: "The X3-MC, the model we tested, has a Fine Line nude-mounted stylus with radii of 35 and 7 micrometers (in contrast with the more usual 18 and 8 micrometers of the elliptical stylus in the XI-MC). The extended line contact of the X3 stylus with the groove walls gives it a high-frequency response out to 40,000 Hz. The rigid aluminum cantilever tube is suspended on a fine piano-wire support and damped by a layer of butyl rubber.
Like almost all MC cartridges, the Ortofon models do not have replaceable styli, but the company offers an exchange service for cartridges with damaged or worn styli. "
Lucky man! First thing I did when I got my Technics SL-6 was to buy and put on the elliptical version of the standard stylus, but that's as far as it's gone so far. (Apart from some routine maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, etc!)

Turns out the guy actually has a reasonable sort of system, Mclaren pre power set up, so probably deserves a better turntable than this one as is. Anyone got a Rega or something similar they want to move on ?
