Hi all, does anyone know where are some good places in Auckland to buy nice veneer? I'd prefer in person to online but can do that if I have to.
Cheers in advance, Dom

Old post but did you find some? Bestwood sell it. Prime Panels sell it. It's classed as a special order but available. Good variety. Another option is Plyman in Henderson. They have an old school press out the back of the workshop and will stitch the flitches to whatever you want. They offer plenty of variety. A newer option is Daniel at Penrose Panel. He installing some very serious equipment at the moment to stitch and press veneers. Full sheets of veneers range from $120-$200 depending on the species and 0.5-0.8mm thick. Cheers!

That's good info thanks. I recently spoke to a cabinet maker and he mentioned that you can order through Carters and they will send it out from Bestwoods. I've seen a few bits and pieces of veneer the times I've been out at Timberman, didn't realise they could actually make it on site, good to know. I'm thinking about walnut veneer for a speaker project.

Yeah you can order from Placmakers, Carters etc for Bestwood. I built some speaker cabinets for my friend and he ordered through Placemakers and veneered them himself. Timberman, yeah, the back half of Plyman. You go through where they have the ply and in to another area. That's where the veneer press is. What speakers have you built?

Only one pair of bookshelves so far, Overnight Sensations. jeremyyoungdesign.com/2016/10/15/overnight-sensations-speaker-build/But I have been thinking a lot about building a small horn speaker. Maybe a 2-way, compression driver and a 12" woofer but I don't really have the expertise to design the horn or cabinet.

Cool. I'd like to hear those someday. They get a pretty good wrap. Plenty of options for that combo you are looking for. I'm toying with the same idea myself 🤔 I'd like to make a cool horn from ply. It's on the short list but super easy to just use plastic one 😂

Have you seen, dipped in to the large 885 page thread on the Econowave project? Summarised in the updated first post, but a lot to read if you have time to. I was thinking of building one with a pair of very sensitive 12" I have that go up high.
Back burner project for the moment.

I've read the Econowave thread on the parts express site, hadn't seen that one. I would be up for the SR Compact 👍

Yeah I've looked a bit at the Econowave, my other options were also the Crites Cornscala Style B and the Pi Speaker 4.

Another vote for Plyman and Penrose Panels. It can be a little daunting for the average DIYer walking into a business geared up for mostly trade sales but both these places are very accomodating.

I am going to enlist his services to help me with my design, the critical technical stuff which I have no experience with, driver selection, cabinet volumes, horn profile, crossover specification etc.
