Looks like a bloody 8 track player. One wonders if this company will ever move on from this tired visual design. Yes, its a signature look. Yes, the amps are a beauty to behold - but I can't help but think that extending this look to every product they release (their TT is hideous!) is a bridge too far and stinks of a lack of innovation. Tired. Stale. Boring. YMMV.

Ah, thanks Owen This review was supposed to be out about 6 months ago. I'm guessing the "affordable" RRP in NZ is around the low $4,000 mark. (Retail US$2000, AU$3795)

i like that toyota !
all it needs is a wrc 1.6 turbo motor and a proper gearbox instead of the wimpy 1.5/cvt.

Look Owen, you've hijacked your own thread! Now it's about cars!?

I'm sure it sounds absolutely stunning - but from a visual design perspective, if that's not staid, then I am afraid sir that your taste is all in your mouth... Staid = sedate, respectable. Or what I prefer to call Classic! Wonder what the MP1100 vacuum phono preamp sounds like. It would fit in nicely I reckon.

staid adjective sedate, respectable, and unadventurous. synonyms: sedate, respectable, quiet, serious, serious-minded, steady, conventional, traditional, unadventurous, unenterprising, set in one's ways;
That said, that wee stack is hot!

I think Mr Heathen has hit the nail on the head with that comment.
Aesthetics are a personal opinion but I find that any of these highly individualised designs, McIntosh, ARC etc work better visually in a matched configuration. The issue for me aesthetically is when you are trying to match up different manufacturers styles and it all ends up looking like a mess.
NB I agree with the comment about the turntable though.

Re: the aesthetics... Rotel's all look the same, Naim all looks the same, Marantz... guess what? They all look the same. The thing is, the McIntosh kit looks like nothing else and there's a strong chance that no one else would dare to make their boxes look like theirs. At the price, it could be a gateway drug for someone putting together their first McStack. Combine the headphone amp and it could be super cool.

Yes, the Macs are fairly uniquely styled, esp with the blue meters. But I must say that my Harman Kardon AVR does actually share some similarities, the black glass front, chrome dial.
