Yup, no argument with that advice from Steve.

I would just add that, I know that my system is working pretty well if it's playing all different types of music well - if I'm able to all different genres in my collection. And when I'm wanting to dig into my collection & play stuff that I haven't played for say 10+ years. And it sounds better than I remember it. It's always a bad sign (for me) if I'm tending to gravitate to playing only certain things, that sound 'good'. OTOH, I've heard many of systems that play only certain music very very well, ie the owners have set things up to play what they only listen to, eg classical, jazz, etc. Nothing wrong with that. Actually, it's probably simpler to set up a system to play a specific genre.

What's wrong with having a system tuned to their taste cartridge?

I think its perfectly possible to get a satisfactory system to your taste on a budget, unless of course your taste is for high volumes with huge dynamics in a large room with only new equipment. But if you have more modest aspirations then I think it is possible.

Why would you not have a system tuned to your taste ? I was referencing the typo in the thread that has since been corrected. As you'll see, I commented that it bugged me more than people tuning their system - which does not bug me whatsoever.
Edits will alter peoples perceptions on interweb threads - it is what it is.
